Chapter 2

*10 Years Earlier*

It had been 6 months since I started seeing Jon and he told me that he finally wanted me to meet his parents. Even though I'd known Jon since the 9th grade, we didn't start dating until our first year of college. During all that time, I never met his parents and needless to say, I was scared out of my pants.

"So what do you say babe? Will you meet them?" Jon asked, searching my eyes for an answer.

I gulped, "I guess so."

He took my hands in an attempt to comfort me and said, "It's going to be okay, don't worry babe."

I closed my eyes and looked down.

"Have you told them about me?" I asked nervously.

"What? That you're this incredibly smart and beautiful girl?" he replied.

"Jon you know what the heck I mean," I said seriously.

He sighed, "That you're black? Of course I did Leslie."

"And?" I urged.

"And...what?" he shrugged.

"Jon! What did they say?" I asked.

"Well my dad was cool. My mom...not so much," he admitted.

I let out a breath, "See, she doesn't like me and she hasn't even met me yet!"

Jon gently placed his hand under my chin to lift my head up.

"Hey look at me Leslie. So what if you're black and I'm white? My mom's opinion of you or any other black person for that matter cannot and will not change the way that I feel about you. Plus, they've always known that I like a little chocolate in my milk, so she's gonna have to get over it," he said.

After he spoke I smiled and gave him a hug and kissed him on the cheek.

"I guess you're right babe, you always know the right thing to say to me," I expressed.

"That's my girl. Now let me go call my parents and tell them that we're coming over for Sunday dinner. I'll see you later honey," he said.

Jon kissed me and I said, "Okay, I'll see you later."

After he left my dorm, I decided to give my mom a call.

"Hey baby, how are you doing?" my mom asked over the phone.

"I'm nervous...really nervous," I said. I could always talk to her about anything.

"What's going on Leslie?" she asked.

I sighed, "Jon just told me that he finally wants me to meet his parents and I'm so scared. His mom is pretty much against our relationship because I'm black, but his dad is cool with it," I replied.

"Wow, well it looks like you've got quite a feat on your hands. Listen baby, being in an interracial relationship will have some ups and downs simply because you two are not from the same cultural background. If you think that this relationship is something that will withstand all the craziness that comes with the territory, then stick it out. And make sure that y'all come by the house because you father and I would like to meet him," mama said.

"Okay mama, I love you. Thanks for always listening. And I'll be sure to tell Jon that you can't wait to see him."

"Alright baby, your dad will be home in about an hour so let me go get dinner started. I love you," she replied.

Jon's POV

I let out a deep breath as I walked to my car from Leslie's dorm. I wished that she wasn't so anxious about meeting my parents but then again, who could blame her? I could still remember how my parents reacted after I told them I was seeing her.

My mom immediately narrowed her eyes and said, "Is she, you know? Black?"

I scoffed, "Yes, is that a problem mother?"

"Honey we should be happy that he's found someone that's good to him," my dad said trying to stick up for me. She just rolled her eyes.

"And what is so wrong with white girls Jon? I swear, I thought this was just a phase you were going through !" she exclaimed rudely.

"What's so wrong with me dating a black girl mom?" I could feel my anger rising.

She glared at me with those icy blue eyes of hers.

"Ugh, where do I begin?! They are so loud and obnoxious! They have bad attitudes and apparently they want to take our men too!" she screamed.

"That's enough! Leslie is none of those things and I'll date her whether you like it or not. I can't believe how ignorant and racist you are!" I yelled back.

She gasped and slapped me. "Jon Alexander Carmichael don't you ever speak to me that way ever again!"

My cheek stung where she just slapped me and my dad said, "Lila you are out of line! What's wrong with you?"

I grabbed my keys and said, "I'm leaving before I do something I'll regret." My dad tried to call after me but I ignored him and walked back to my car

That was months ago and now here I was ready to tell them that I want them to meet Leslie. When I got back to my dorm I was greeted by my roommate Brian.

"What's up bro?" he asked. I put my backpack on my desk and said, "I told Leslie that I finally want her to meet my folks."

Brian whistled, "Yo that's great bro! But why do you look so upset though?"

"My mom is...not too fond of black women for some reason. My dad can't wait to meet her but every time I mention my girl, my mom goes crazy. The last two girls I dated were black but I never brought them around because of her. But Leslie is different; I think she's the one man," I replied.

"Wow...how is Leslie taking it?" he asked.

"She's super nervous, but I tried to console her. I'm not ashamed of us and I hope she isn't either. My mom is just gonna have to get over it," I said.

"Dang, this must be getting pretty serious then. Good luck with that bro," Brian said.

"Thanks man." Right then my phone sounded and it was a text from Leslie saying, "Okay babe, we'll get through meeting your parents but the week after that, my parents want to meet you."

I responded, "Sure thing babe."

"I'm about to go hit up the gym, wanna come?" Brian asked.

"Nah, I gotta call my folks. I'll catch you next time though," I replied.

After Brian left, I picked up my phone and dialed my parents' house number.

"Hello?" my dad answered.

"Hey dad, how are ya?"

"Hey son, I'm great! How are you?" he asked.

"I'm doing great. Um...I have a question though," I said nervously.

"Okay, what is it?" he replied.

"Well, is it okay if I bring Leslie with me to Sunday dinner?" I asked.

"Of course you can! You talk about her so much, I was wondering when you would bring her around," he said happily.

"I would have brought you sooner but you know...mom is nuts," I said.

"I'll handle your mother, don't worry," he reassured me.

"Thanks dad, this really means a lot to me."

"No problem. Oh your mother just walked in so I'll talk to you later. Don't you worry about anything. Love you son."

"I love you too dad, bye."

After we hung up, I flopped down on my bed feeling grateful that my dad answered the phone and reality started to sink in; Leslie was going to meet my parents!
