The wooden doors of the orphanage slammed shut behind him, the echo loud enough to rattle the narrow street. Naruto stumbled forward, a small bundle of clothes clutched to his chest. The matron’s words still stung in his ears “loud, filthy brat… you’ll never belong here.” The lock slid into place, sealing him out for good.
For a long moment, the six-year-old boy just stood there, his wide blue eyes reflecting the lamplight. He didn’t cry. He’d learned long ago that crying only made people angrier. Instead, he screwed his face into a stubborn grin, one that didn’t quite reach his eyes, and muttered, “Fine. Who wants to live in that stupid dump anyway?”
Up on the rooftops, four shadows watched him go.
“Disgusting,” Anko hissed under her breath, fists clenched tight. “Throwing a kid out like garbage. I swear, if that hag ever”
“Calm yourself,” Itachi’s low voice cut through her fury. His tone was even, unreadable, but his eyes lingered on Naruto’s small form longer than necessary.
Shisui shifted, his usual grin nowhere to be found. “You’d think the Hokage would step in. Kid’s barely six.”
“Old man’s watching, but not enough,” Kakashi finally said, voice dry as ash. Beneath his mask, his jaw was set tight. He couldn’t look away from Naruto trudging into the darkening streets with nothing but a bundle of rags. Sensei… Kushina… this is what your boy has been left to.
None of them said more. They weren’t supposed to. Orders were clear observe, protect, report. Nothing personal. But each step Naruto took into the shadows made the ANBU masks feel heavier on their faces.
Naruto didn’t notice them. He walked with quick steps, forcing a grin like he had somewhere important to be. His sandals slapped against the stones as he veered into parts of the village most avoided alleys that smelled of smoke and old liquor, where broken signs dangled from rusted nails and laughter turned sharp at night. The red-light district was close, but Naruto didn’t care. All he knew was that the farther he walked, the fewer people glared at him.
That’s when he saw it.
Tucked between two forgotten warehouses sat a house no one claimed. The roof sagged, walls cracked, and weeds clawed through broken stones. The door hung half open, dust spilling out like a warning.
Naruto’s eyes lit up.
“Guess this is mine now,” he whispered, shoving the door open. Dust filled his nose, cobwebs tugged at his hair, but he barreled inside anyway. The floor groaned beneath him, a rat scurried across the wall, and something dripped steadily from the ceiling.
It was awful. Broken. Ugly.
And it was his.
Naruto threw his bundle into the corner, raised his arms wide, and shouted, “Welcome to Casa de Naruto!” His laughter rang through the abandoned halls, echoing so loudly it almost sounded like the house laughed with him.
High above, the ANBU watched in silence.
Shisui leaned forward on his perch, shaking his head but smiling faintly. “He’s got guts, I’ll give him that. Calls a pile of junk a palace.”
“Or he’s too stupid to know better,” Anko muttered, though her voice had lost some of its bite.
Kakashi said nothing, only narrowing his eye. He could see Kushina’s spark in the boy’s wild grin, and Minato’s calm in the way he shrugged off loneliness like it was nothing. That mixture made his chest ache. You should be here, not me, he thought bitterly.
Itachi stayed quiet as well, but the faintest crease formed between his brows. The way Naruto’s smile stretched too wide, too practiced… It reminded him of a mask. And masks, he knew, always cracked.
