The night was still, too still, as Siyeon scribbled furiously in her notebook, the scratch of her pen the only sound in the empty classroom. Her jaw ached from clenching. "Six days. Only six days until the CSATs. "
She tapped her pen against the page.
"You've been slacking, Siyeon.
Because of him."
She shoved her books into her bag and slung it over her shoulder. Jake hadn't come by all evening, and she assumed he'd just gone home, 'if he even has one,' she thought.
When she finally stepped out, the air bit at her skin. The campus was dark except for a few dim lights lining the path. She wrapped her arms around herself, walking briskly.
"You're avoiding me."
The voice came from the shadows. She froze, heart skipping. Jake.
Her lips pressed thin. "I'm not."
He stepped into the faint light, his expression unreadable, but his eyes fixed on her. "Then why won't you look at me? Why do you make excuses so you don't have to hang out with me?"
Siyeon turned and kept walking. "Because I don't have time for this. I need to study."
His footsteps followed hers. Slow. Heavy. "No, it's not that. You're doing it again. Pretending nothing's wrong when you're already pulling away from me."
Her grip tightened on her bag strap. The silence stretched, the tension pressing down until she snapped.
"Because something is wrong, Jake." She spun around, her voice shaking. "I don't know how you expect me to just smile and act like nothing happened when—when you've killed people."
Jake's face hardened, but his voice stayed low. "I told you, I'm not that person anymore. I'm trying."
"Trying?" Her laugh was brittle, almost hysterical. "Do you think that erases everything? Do you think trying makes that my boyfriend literally has blood on his hands?"
He flinched, and for a second, she hated herself for it. But the words wouldn't stop.
"Do you even hear yourself sometimes? Do you know what it's like to look at you and wonder if—if one day you'll snap and I'll just be another body you left behind?"
Jake's jaw clenched, something wounded in his eyes. "You think I'd hurt you?"
"You nearly done it before so who says you can't again?!" Siyeon's voice cracked, louder than she intended. "You terrify me and you matter to me and I hate that it's both at the same time!" Her breaths came fast, ragged. She could feel the tears pressing, but she refused to let them fall.
Finally, after a long silence, her voice dropped to a whisper. "So yeah .. I'm a bit scared of you. If you heard all the gruesome things you've done, I think you would be as well."
