"God, you look horrible. No offence," Siyeon said as she walked up to Jake after class, her brows furrowing.
"None taken," Jake muttered, forcing a small smile.
"But really, are you okay? You didn't even bother me last night or at school today. That's a first."
"Yeah... just a bit tired."
"Mm, kay..." she hummed, though her eyes lingered on him longer than usual, suspicious.
Before Jake could respond, Sunghoon appeared out of nowhere. His hand latched onto Siyeon's wrist and pulled her aside, dragging her down the hallway until they were in a quiet corner.
"Hey-" Siyeon tugged her arm back, half laughing. "You didn't even let me speak before you dragged me away."
Sunghoon didn't smile. His expression was carved in stone, his voice sharp.
"Did you free Jaeyun?"
Siyeon froze, her heart thudding. How... how did he know about that?
"Sunghoon... what are you talking about?" she tried to play it off, but her voice cracked slightly.
"Don't play dumb with me." His eyes narrowed, burning holes into her. "He told me you freed him. So answer me. Jake, Jaeyun, whatever you call him. Did you free him? Yes or no."
Siyeon swallowed hard, then finally snapped, "Since you care so much, yes, I did free him. But it was an accident. Why does it matter to you? He hasn't even done anything to you."
"Harm?" Sunghoon stepped closer, his voice low and dangerous. "He's a demon, Siyeon. Who do you think killed Hana and Ms. Lee? Demons feed on humans. Jaeyun did it."
The words hit her like a slap, but after a brief hesitation, she shook her head. "No."
Sunghoon blinked. "What do you mean no?"
"He couldn't have done it. Have you even looked at him? He looks like he hasn't eaten in weeks. Ms. Lee only died three days ago. If he had fed from her, he wouldn't look worse than usual, he'd look stronger."
Sunghoon's jaw clenched. His voice sharpened. "Why are you defending him? Did he threaten you? Did he make some kind of deal with you?"
"No," Siyeon shot back firmly. Her voice trembled, but her eyes didn't waver. "I believe he's a good person."
Sunghoon stared at her in disbelief. "Do you hear yourself? Demons can't be good. They're literally born from their own worst emotions. You really think he cares about you? He's just using you." He leaned in closer, his voice darkening. "You want to know the truth? He told me himself he'd kill you if I stood in his way. And he meant it."
That made Siyeon falter. Her chest tightened as doubt pricked at the back of her mind. Would Jake really say that?
Sunghoon noticed her silence and pressed harder. "See? You don't even know him yourself."
