At school, Sunghoon's gaze kept burning into Jake from across the room. Every flick of his pen, every lazy grin—it all grated on him. Jake knew he was being watched, but he only leaned back in his chair with that smug smirk, certain Sunghoon wouldn't dare start anything in the middle of class.
Meanwhile, Eunji, Miji, and Siyeon huddled together at their desks.
"So, where were you after school yesterday?" Eunji asked casually, flipping through her textbook.
Siyeon hesitated before answering. "...I went out with Jake."
Miji's head snapped up immediately. "On a date?"
"It wasn't a date," Siyeon said flatly, shaking her head. "He just... wanted me to get my mind off things after Ms. Lee's death."
"I don't get why you were so sad about that," Miji muttered, tapping her pen against her notebook. "She was a mean old hag."
"Miji!" Eunji scolded, nudging her. "You can't say that."
But before Miji could reply, Siyeon's quiet voice slipped out. "...She's not wrong though."
Both Eunji and Miji froze, staring at her. Siyeon kept her eyes down, fiddling with her pencil. She hadn't meant to say it out loud.
Siyeon blinked at their stares, suddenly defensive. "What? Miji can say it but I can't?"
"Well, no..." Eunji trailed off awkwardly, clearly unsure how to handle it. She quickly changed the subject. "Anyway, are you sure you and Jake aren't going out together? It's pretty obvious you like him."
Siyeon nearly choked on her own breath. "No I don't." Her voice was sharp, a little too fast. "Plus even if I did, I can't date him."
"Why not?" Miji pressed, smirking knowingly.
Siyeon's thoughts screamed: Because he's a human-eating demon.
But what she actually said was:
"...His parents are really strict when it comes to dating."
Miji rolled her eyes. "Lame excuse."
Eunji just frowned, studying Siyeon more carefully.
From across the room, Jake rested his chin on his hand, pretending to look bored. But he'd heard every word. His lips twitched into a grin, though something flickered in his eyes. As if he knew she wasn't telling the truth.
After school, Jake strolled beside Siyeon, hands shoved into his pockets.
"So... what were you and your friends talking about earlier?" he asked casually, though his tone carried just enough edge to make it obvious he already knew.
