The two teens just stared at each other, blush spreading on their cheeks. After a while of awkwardness, Jungwon went back to examining the list.
His eyes roamed until another familiar name made his eyes widened. Schmul Kantor.
"Carolin," Jungwon brought her back to reality from her daydreams.
She looked over his shoulder again at his pointing finger. Her eyes narrowed and then she realized. "Is that...?" Jungwon nodded.
"It's a death list," she whispered, her voice laced with fear.

Carolin fidgeted with her fingers while looking at the ground. Her tutor was asking question about the book she was supposed to read but she just nodded along, not paying attention.
"Carolin! Wake up!"
She looked up at her tutor with an expressionless face. "Miss, do you know about any death lists?" Carolin asked. Since her tutor was so passionate about the war, she must know something.
Her tutor frowned. "What?"
"Lists, with names of prisoners that will get killed. Do you know about that?" Carolin asked again.
"What kind of question is that?" Her tutor asked bewildered.
"Just answer please."
"No, I don't, and I'm sure they don't exist. There's no need to keep track of such filth," her tutor answered.
Carolin's expression didn't change but she knew she was lying. She must be, right?
"Where did you get that from?"
"Rumors," she simply answered. The lie ran smoothly in her tongue. She was a talented liar, that was for sure.
Her tutor narrowed her eyes but then went back to the book. Carolin's morning was spent between getting yelled at to pay attention and fear for Jungwon's safety. She thought of how she could save him.
It was very simple to just cross out his name but that would be so obvious and a bigger problem would happen. But if she re-wrote the list without his name then it would be as if he'd never been on the list to start with.
All she needed to do now was get into her dad's office and use his typewriter. Easier said than done. Giselle seemed to have become the personal guard of his office ever since she caught Carolin inside. If she wanted to do anything, it would have to be at night. And very silently.
