He stepped up to take his turn. Flicked the ball.
Miss.
I grinned. “Ouch.”
Aidan was next. He tossed it perfectly and sank it right into the front corner cup.
Jake groaned again. “You guys are annoying.”
“Thank you,” I said sweetly.
For the next few rounds, the competition heated up. Jake managed to land two in a row, Aidan bounced one for double points, and I caught Connor glaring every time I high-fived Aidan a little too enthusiastically.
And I?
I made it a point to high-five Aidan every. single. time.
Once I even spun dramatically into his arms and let him catch me just because I knew Connor was watching.
Not my fault he kept looking.
The score was 5 to 5. One last cup each.
Final round. Pressure on.
Connor stepped forward.
He spun the ball between his fingers. His eyes met mine.
And then he tossed it—
Clink.
In.
Jake screamed, “YESSS!”
The crowd erupted.
I rolled my eyes. “Show off.”
But then it was my turn.
I stepped forward slowly. Dramatically. Everyone got quiet.
Connor watched me like he was trying to read my mind.
I held the ball up between my fingers.
Aidan leaned over and whispered, “If you win this, I owe you bubble tea.”
“And if I lose?”
“You still get bubble tea.”
I smiled. Looked Connor dead in the eyes.
And threw the ball.
Clink.
SPLASH.
Dead center.
A beat of silence.
Then the crowd exploded.
“OH MY GOD!!” Yumi screamed from across the room.
Jake dropped to his knees.
Connor just stared. And then slowly he smiled. Like he couldn’t help it. Like it physically hurt him to admit I’d just kicked his ass in public.
“Okay,” he muttered. “That was hot.”
I gave him a smug little wink. “Told you.”
Aidan pulled me into a quick celebratory hug, spinning me once. I let out a half-laugh, dizzy from the adrenaline and ofc from the beer. He held me there just a second longer than necessary.
Jake stood up, arms spread wide. “Okay, okay. A deal’s a deal. Mystery punch shots for the losers!”
Connor looked at the cup with open suspicion. “What even is this?”
"Don't worry about it" I grinned. “Drink up.”
He stared at me, took the shot, and then winced like he’d just swallowed motor oil.
“Holy shit—what was that?” he choked.
“Victory,” I said, blowing him a kiss.
Aidan raised his hand. “Let’s go again. Rematch?”
