I didn't expect much when Connor Sharpe followed me back.
Just some random notification while hanging out with my best friend.
But one simple "hi" turns into something neither of us saw coming.
A couple of years apart, different grades, and a millio...

I tossed my phone gently onto Yumi’s bed and looked over at her with a small, hopeful smile. “You know what? Let’s watch their new video instead. Might as well see what Connor’s up to.”
Yumi’s eyes sparkled, like I’d just suggested the perfect way to pass the restless late-night hours. “Yes! Perfect distraction,” she said, bouncing up to grab her laptop from the desk.
The glow from the screen filled the room as she clicked play. The video started with that familiar warmth — Connor’s family gathered in their cozy living room, the soft hum of laughter already floating through the speakers. Mom and Dad sat side by side on the couch, while Logan, Sam, and Aiden bickered playfully in the background. Connor lounged casually, his easy grin lighting up the frame.
Watching them felt like peeking into a little world I’d come to know through countless videos, late-night scrolling sessions, and daydreams I barely dared to admit out loud. Even though I’d never met him, Connor felt… approachable. Real. Like the kid down the street, not some untouchable internet star.
The video was chaotic in the best way — siblings throwing playful jabs, inside jokes, a few goofy dance moves, and genuine moments of connection. I felt a strange mix of comfort and nerves, my heart thumping in a way that wasn’t just because of the popcorn I’d eaten earlier.
Yumi caught my eye and gave me a sly smile. “So… still not texting him?”
I bit my lip and looked down at my phone. “Not yet. But soon. Maybe.”
She laughed softly. “Yeah, sure. That’s what you said last night.”
I rolled my eyes but didn’t argue. The truth was, every time I thought about hitting send, my mind turned to mush. My fingers hovered over the keyboard, frozen by the sheer weight of the moment.
The video continued, the camera shifting to Dad, who leaned forward with a mischievous grin. “Alright, next question,” he said, eyes twinkling as he read aloud from a tablet. “‘This one’s from CrazyFan20012 — less a question, more of a dare. ‘Connor, we dare you to go on TikTok right now and follow back five random followers. No cheating!’”
Connor groaned dramatically, rolling his eyes but smiling. “Seriously? You guys and your dares…” He grabbed his phone and started scrolling through his followers list.
Yumi’s eyes widened, and she nudged me excitedly. “Wait, wait — did he just say ‘follow back five random followers’? Like, that could include you!”
My heart stuttered in my chest. I sat up a little straighter, the familiar flutter of excitement turning sharp with nerves. “Wait… are you saying he followed me because of this?”
“Sounds like it!” Yumi said with a grin that was impossible to miss. “No wonder he followed you out of the blue.”
I stared at the screen, the buzzing in my brain growing louder. So that was it. Not some secret admirer or grand cosmic plan — just a random dare on a family YouTube video.
Part of me wanted to laugh at the sheer randomness. Another part of me still felt that thrilling, surreal sense of being noticed — like a tiny spark igniting in a universe that felt way too big.
Yumi flopped back on her bed, crossing her arms and smirking. “See? Told you it wasn’t some huge mystery. But hey, now you’ve got his attention. Time to make your move.”
I swallowed hard, my fingers twitching over my phone again. The blinking cursor on the chat screen seemed to mock me, daring me to take the plunge.
“Maybe tonight’s the night,” I whispered, more to myself than to Yumi.
The room grew quieter, the only sound the gentle tapping of Yumi’s keyboard as she pulled up a playlist of chill songs. The lavender scent from her diffuser wrapped around us like a soft blanket, but my mind was a storm of “what ifs” and “maybes.”
What if I said the wrong thing? What if I came off as too eager? Or worse — what if I didn’t say anything at all and missed my chance forever?
Yumi caught my gaze again, her smile softer this time. “You’re overthinking it. Just be yourself. He’s probably nervous too, in his own way.”
I nodded slowly, drawing in a shaky breath. Maybe she was right. Maybe Connor wasn’t some perfect image on a screen. Maybe he was just a kid, like me, trying to figure things out.
The clock ticked past midnight, and my heart felt like it might burst from my chest. My thumb hovered one last time over the message box, then slowly — I tapped.
"Hey, Connor. Thanks for the follow. This is kind of nerve-wracking, but I’m glad you did."
I hit send before I could talk myself out of it.
Yumi whooped softly. “There it is! First step, done.”
I exhaled a shaky breath, feeling like I’d just crossed some invisible finish line.
Now… I just had to wait.
