Yumi and I were still sharing the same bed like we’d done since we were kids. The room was softly lit by the early morning sun filtering through the curtains. Just as my alarm was about to buzz, I felt a sudden, unexpected kick to my back.

Thump! I tumbled off the bed, landing with a grunt on the floor.

“Oof!” I muttered, rubbing my arm as I looked up at Yumi, who was blinking awake, her hair a messy halo around her face.

Before my alarm even had a chance to ring, Yumi asked groggily, “Why are you on the floor?”

I rolled my eyes, a grin tugging at the corners of my mouth. “Because you kicked me off, duh.”

She burst out laughing, the sound light and infectious. “Oops. Sorry!”

We both laughed again before my alarm finally started buzzing, breaking the peaceful moment.

“Okay, okay, time to get up,” Yumi said, reaching over to silence the noise. We shuffled around the room, grabbing clothes, brushing hair, and sneaking sips of coffee Yumi’s mom had left on the counter.

School felt far away, but I was oddly looking forward to P.E. today. Volleyball was on the schedule, and normally I loved it — the energy, the quick reflexes, the rhythm of the game. But more than that, I was waiting for it because it gave me a chance to keep my mind off… well, Connor.

At school, Yumi and I slid into our usual rhythm. Classes passed in a blur of notes and the occasional nervous glance at my phone. Every time it buzzed, my heart jumped, hoping it was the message.

Finally, P.E. rolled around. The gym was buzzing with energy as the volleyball game started. I was usually one of the best players, quick on my feet and sharp with my hands. But today, my thoughts were miles away.

As the ball flew toward me, instead of moving to hit it back, I froze — caught up in daydreams of blinking notifications and Connor’s possible reply.

Thwack! The ball hit me square in the arm.

The room went quiet for a beat, and the coach looked at me, surprised. “You okay?”

I nodded quickly, cheeks burning. Normally, I’d snap the ball back with force and precision, but today, I just stood there.

Yumi jogged over, smirking. “You were totally daydreaming.”

I shrugged, trying to play it cool. “Yeah, just thinking about Connor.”

Later, after school, Yumi, Laura, Jake, and I went to our favorite coffee shop to unwind. The air was warm with the scent of fresh coffee and pastries, and the chatter around us felt like the perfect backdrop to my jittery mood.

I pulled out my phone to check it one more time and there it was. A message from Connor.

I nearly choked on my drink. I froze mid-sip, my eyes glued to the screen. The mug in my hand nearly slipped, and I hastily set it down before anyone noticed.

Laura glanced over, her brow knitting together. “Hey, you okay? You look like you just saw a ghost.”

Jake leaned in, curious. “Yeah, what’s up? You’re acting all weird.”

Yumi, who was sitting closest to me, caught my sudden stiff silence instantly. Her eyes sparkled with mischief as she nudged me. “Let me guess… Connor texted?”

I tried to keep my expression neutral, but Yumi’s grin made it impossible. “Maybe,” I admitted, voice barely above a whisper.

“Then what are you waiting for?” Laura asked. “Open it already!”

“But what if it’s nothing? Or something weird?” I bit my lip, still hesitant. The message bubble stared at me like a ticking bomb.

Yumi rolled her eyes fondly. “Girl, you’re overthinking. He followed you for a reason. Now it’s your turn to talk.”

Jake laughed, reaching over to playfully poke my arm. “Come on, live a little. It’s just a text.”

I took a deep breath, fingers trembling slightly. The group leaned in, a chorus of encouragement and teasing.

“Okay,” I said, unlocking the message.

The screen lit up with Connor’s reply:

The room buzzed with excitement. Yumi whooped, Laura clapped, and Jake gave me a thumbs-up.

I smiled, feeling the weird mix of nerves and thrill wash over me. The conversation was officially on.
