Laura: laughing “I caught that too, you literally yelped.”

Jake: “It was a startled reaction. Not fear.”

Aidan stood up and stretched. “I’m getting water. Anyone want some?”

Everyone mumbled yes. Connor let go of my hand quietly when he stood to follow him. Before he left the room, though, he glanced back at me and gave me the tiniest smile.

Laura leaned in next to me, whispering like she’d just watched an episode of a teen drama. “Sooo… you and Connor?”

I side eyed her. “Shhh.”

She grinned. “Girl. I saw everything. You were holding hands like it was a whole secret love story.”

“It’s not like that,” I whispered, face burning.

“Uh-huh,” she said, smug. “Sure it’s not.”

Jake flopped backward on the couch. “I’m sleeping right here. If anyone even thinks about turning off a single light, I’m suing.”

Yumi rolled her eyes. “That movie was not even scary. You’ll survive.”

Laura laughed and stood up. “I call dibs on the guest room with the soft pillows.”

As we began grabbing blankets and planning sleeping spots, Aidan walked back in from the kitchen carrying a couple of water bottles. He handed one to me without hesitation and smiled.

“You good? Didn’t think you’d survive The Conjuring without crying.”

I laughed lightly. “I only cried inside.”

He let out a chuckle, but instead of sitting back next to his original seat, he dropped onto the floor in front of me, casually leaning his back against the couch right between my legs.

Like, directly. Between. My. Legs.

My whole body froze.

It wasn’t weird well, okay, it kind of was but Aidan didn’t seem to think anything of it. He just leaned his head back against my knees like we were long lost besties and said, “You’re warm. Bonus.”

Connor had just walked in from the hallway, carrying some spare pillows, and I saw him halt in his tracks like he walked into an invisible wall.

He took one look at Aidan. Then at me.

I panicked a little and tried to subtly shift, pulling my knees up, but Aidan leaned further back, practically nestling between my legs like we were cuddling.

“Can I steal this blanket too?” Aidan asked, tugging at the one on my lap. “I’m cold.”

“Dude,” Jake called from the couch. “Get your own.”

“I’m just borrowing some leg warmth,” Aidan teased.

Connor stood there, still silent. But now his eyes were locked on Aiden, and the sharpness in his jaw made my chest tighten.

I looked up at him helplessly, hoping he’d read the panic in my eyes this is not me flirting. I didn’t do this. Help.

He said nothing.

Just dropped the pillows on the couch and walked away.

Later that night — past midnight

Everyone had finally settled into their chosen sleeping zones. Laura was in the guest room, Yumi and Jake passed out in sleeping bags in the living room, Aidan disappeared into his own room, and Connor had gone silent for a good hour.
