“Don’t worry,” he said with a lopsided grin. “If the demon lady shows up, I’ll protect you.”

I snorted. “You? You’d be the first one running.”

That made him laugh and lean closer. “Okay, maybe. But I’d at least try to push you behind me first.”

We both chuckled softly, unaware that someone on the other side of me had gone unusually quiet.

Connor.

I could feel him stiffen slightly, the way his arm tensed against the back of the couch. My eyes flicked over to him, but he was staring at the screen with a blank expression, jaw clenched just a little too tightly to be casual.

I looked back at the movie, ignoring the way my stomach twisted.

It’s nothing. He’s not mad. Aidan and I are just friends.

Then the first jump scare hit a loud crash and a ghostly scream from the speakers. I yelped and instinctively clutched onto Aidan’s arm.

He laughed again, clearly enjoying my reaction, and leaned a bit closer. “You okay?”

“Yeah,” I whispered. “That one just got me.”

“Wanna hold my hand for the next one?”

I swatted him lightly on the arm. “Shut up.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Connor shift again. This time, he moved slightly away from me. His knee bumped into the edge of the coffee table with a soft thud, and he muttered something under his breath.

He’s totally taking this the wrong way.

I wasn’t flirting with Aiden, I swear. It was just banter. But when you’re sitting between two gorgeous twin brothers, one of whom you might like, and the other acting like your lifelong friend? Yeah. It’s hard to manage the line.

Another scare came this time with the creepy music box scene and Yumi screamed, hiding her face in Jake’s hoodie while Laura threw popcorn at the screen.

I used the chaos to lean slightly toward Connor.

“Hey,” I whispered, careful that no one else heard. “You okay?”

He didn’t answer at first. Just kept watching the screen.

Then, without looking at me, he muttered, “Sure. Why wouldn’t I be?”

Ouch.

Okay. He was jealous. Or upset. Or both. And he wasn’t doing a good job of hiding it.

I bit my lip and looked away, deciding not to push. I could talk to him after the movie.

Still, my mood was weird now. I wasn't exactly scared of the movie anymore.

Suddenly, I felt someone’s hand brush mine beneath the blanket. My breath caught but when I looked down, it was Connor’s hand. Slowly, he interlaced his fingers with mine under the covers. He didn’t look at me. Just… quietly held my hand.

I didn’t say anything. I just squeezed his hand back.

It was such a small thing. So quiet. But it said everything.

Later that night

The movie ended with everyone either half asleep or dramatically over acting how “not scared” they were.

Jake: “Please. That wasn’t even scary.”

Yumi: “Then why did you scream like a toddler during the mirror scene?”
