I barely had the energy to agree, but the thought of stumbling back to an empty house made my stomach twist.
Aidan, who had been leaning casually against the fence, suddenly pushed off and said, "Well, why don't we just go to our place? Our parents won't mind."
The group all turned to look at him, surprised.
"It's late, and you're clearly not okay," he continued. "My family's pretty chill about this kind of stuff. We can keep an eye on her."
Marcus, who'd been quiet for a moment, grabbed his skateboard and said, "I'm gonna head out. Y'all be safe."
"Thanks, Marcus," Yumi called, waving as he disappeared down the street.
Connor helped me to my feet, his arm steadying me. We walked slowly toward their house, the night air cool against my flushed skin.
-------------------
We stumbled through the front door of the Sharpe house, still laughing too loudly, our steps a little too clumsy. The night air had cooled our flushed cheeks, but the alcohol was still warm in our veins.
Connor was the first to close the door behind us, locking it with a small click. "Everyone inside," he said in a low voice that was trying to sound composed, but even he was swaying slightly.
The house was silent, warm. The soft amber lighting spilled from the living room, untouched, undisturbed. Something about it felt... too quiet.
"Are your parents asleep already?" Laura asked, kicking off her shoes, her words slightly slurred.
Aidan walked past the kitchen island and then suddenly stopped. "Uh-guys?"
We all turned.
He reached for a note that had been pinned to the fridge door with a tiny cactus magnet. His brows furrowed as he scanned the handwriting, then read aloud:
> "Out for dinner. Be back late. Don't burn the house down. - Mom."
There was a pause. Then:
Yumi clapped once. "Okay, well, that settles it."
Laura blinked. "Settles what exactly?"
Yumi smirked. "Truth or Dare."
Connor groaned. "Really?"
"Yep," Jake said, flopping onto the couch. "That is exactly what people do in teen movies when they're tipsy, left alone in a big house, and probably too emotionally repressed to talk about real stuff."
I laughed, falling next to Yumi on the carpet. "He has a point."
Connor glanced at me and smiled. "Fine," he said, throwing his hoodie over a chair. "Let's play."
-------------------
We set up in the living room, pillows scattered, lights dimmed, water bottles in hand in an attempt to chase down the alcohol in our bloodstreams. The night felt slower here, softer. There was music playing faintly from someone's phone, a chill, lo-fi beat barely noticeable.
The circle was set: me, Yumi, Jake, Laura, Aiden, and Connor. Thank God Marcus had gone home earlier because with the way Connor looked at him when he helped me on the skateboard? Yeah... I wasn't ready for round two of that.
I sat cross-legged on a fuzzy throw pillow, Connor just to my left, his knee brushing mine occasionally when he shifted. If he noticed, he didn't say anything.
Jake spun a bottle in the middle. It wobbled, tilted dramatically, and landed pointing at Yumi.
He grinned. "Truth or dare?"
