Hokage Office 3:15 pm
It all started when Obito found Kakashi sleeping at his desk at the Hokage office.
Obito was not gone for long. Last he could recall, Kakashi was busy reading through a thick stack of papers, a recent proposal to expand the Konoha technology sector, when Shizune came in to ask for Obito’s help in carrying over more files from downstairs.
In a way, Obito is not surprised. For the past few months, Kakashi has been working nonstop for almost 20 hours, 7 days a week. When he’s not at the office signing through endless piles of documents, he’s going to events or meetings all over the village. The poor guy barely had any time to go home and sleep, much less take a short break to relax and get a proper meal.
Obito is not even sure he had a chance to steal a look at his smut novels…
Obito snorts. “Seems about right.” With a sigh, he walks into the quiet office and sets the stack of files atop another tall stack right next to the desk, then walks over to check on the sleeping Kakashi.
The white-haired man is fast asleep, almost like he just collapsed onto the desk, except his head is turned to the side with his eyelids half-closed and fluttering. Obito arches an eyebrow and leans in till he’s a few inches away. He notices a few silvery hair strands have fallen over Kakashi’s eyes, giving him a soft, peaceful look. Obito can’t help it when a soft smile pulls at his lips.
He’s never let himself get this close to anyone. It feels odd somehow, but at the same time, special, like being safe and at home–something that Obito didn’t have for most of his life. Of course, he wouldn’t feel comfortable being this close if Kakashi were awake. That would be a different story.
Obito reaches down to move the hair strands away, but hesitates. He doesn’t know when it happened, but his feelings for Kakashi started to change over the past few months.
After the war, it took a while for him to adjust to living a normal life in the village he once declared war upon. And, it also took a long time for the people of Konoha to accept him, or at least treat him with mild indifference. Of course, some villagers still look upon him with disdain whenever he walks past, and Obito makes sure to keep to himself quietly. He understands that there will always be people who harbor hatred toward him, and he knows that he deserves it as part of his atonement for staying alive, despite all of his sins.
Even so, he doesn’t understand why Kakashi tries to defend him whenever this happens.
…..
It was once during a meeting Kakashi had with important, wealthy individuals of Konoha. He was there to gather funds to update the city's infrastructure in preparation for technological advancements. These individuals were technically regular civilians, or non-shinobi, who never fought a battle in their lives but still held onto their own snobbish opinions about how to run things in the village. They especially had certain ideas about what to do with Obito.
Obito decided to stay out of the meeting, but waited out in the hall in case Kakashi needed him. He did this often, as he knew his mere presence could sometimes make people uncomfortable.
Obito was waiting outside the room when he heard sudden loud voices.
“That man should be put back in prison!”
“He should be locked away where he will never see the light of day–!”
“Someone evil like that… can never be trusted in our village ever again. We should get rid of him. Or better, we should just k–”
“That’s enough!”
Gasps erupt around the room.
Obito perks up at the sound of the last voice. Was that… Kakashi?
