The library of bone

Ko arrived at Marrowbone University in the rain.

The kind of rain that soaks through your coat and into your bones, like the sky wants to drown you slowly. Everything was too old. Too quiet. The campus looked like it had been built by ghosts.

They didn't speak to anyone on move-in day.

Didn't unpack much either.

Just opened their suitcase, pulled out the books, and lined them on the window ledge like wards.

This wasn't the start of something. It was the end of something softer.

And Ko didn't want to be seen.

They wanted to disappear.

--

The library was the only place that didn't ache.

Five stories tall. Gothic as hell. Crows in the rafters. Windows like stained-glass wounds.

Ko found it by accident their first week-drawn to the silence like a moth to static. They found a back corner in the third floor study hall and claimed it without a word.

Every night, they sat there until close.

Reading.

Thinking.

Listening to the hum of something that felt almost alive in the walls.

Sometimes, they thought they heard footsteps behind the shelves. Breathing between the pages.

But when they looked, no one was ever there.
