Chapter 4: Shadows and Sparks

The sun cast a golden hue over the sprawling campus of Space Academy, its rays filtering through the tall glass windows, illuminating the corridors with a warm glow. The morning buzz was palpable, students milling about, laughter echoing, and the occasional strum of a guitar resonating from the music rooms.

Nandini Murthy stepped out of her dormitory, her attire a blend of comfort and style—a pair of high-waisted denim shorts paired with a soft, pastel-colored top that fluttered slightly in the breeze. Her long hair was tied up in a messy bun, a few strands escaping to frame her delicate face. She exuded a quiet confidence, her eyes scanning the campus with a mix of curiosity and apprehension.

As she made her way towards the main building, she couldn't help but notice the subtle shifts in the atmosphere. Conversations hushed as she passed, eyes lingered a bit longer, and whispers trailed behind her. She tried to ignore it, attributing it to her status as a newcomer.

Unbeknownst to her, Manik Malhotra, the enigmatic leader of Fab 5, stood on the balcony of the music lounge, his gaze fixed intently on her. His sharp eyes followed her every move, a storm brewing behind them. He was intrigued, annoyed, and something else he couldn't quite place.

"She's different," he muttered to himself.

Cabir Dhawan, lounging on a beanbag nearby, raised an eyebrow. "Who?"

Manik didn't respond, his eyes still locked on Nandini's retreating figure.

Later that day, in the cafeteria

Nandini sat at a corner table, her tray untouched as she flipped through her notes. Navya Naveli, her ever-enthusiastic roommate, plopped down beside her, her eyes wide with excitement.

"Nandu! Did you hear? Fab 5 is planning a surprise performance today!"

Nandini looked up, her brows furrowing. "Really? That's... interesting."

Navya leaned in, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "And guess what? I heard Manik has been asking about you."

Nandini's heart skipped a beat. "Me? Why?"

Navya shrugged, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Maybe he finds you intriguing."

Before Nandini could respond, the cafeteria lights dimmed, and a spotlight illuminated the makeshift stage at the far end. The crowd erupted into cheers as Fab 5 took their positions.

Manik stepped forward, his guitar slung over his shoulder. His eyes scanned the crowd, finally settling on Nandini. A smirk played on his lips.

"This one's for someone... special," he announced, his gaze never leaving hers.

The music began, a haunting melody that seemed to weave its way into Nandini's very soul. She felt exposed, as if the song was a direct message to her. Her cheeks flushed, and she quickly looked away.

After the performance, as the crowd dispersed, Manik approached her table, his presence commanding.

"Enjoyed the show?" he asked, his voice low.

Nandini nodded, her eyes meeting his. "It was... intense."

He leaned in slightly, his eyes searching hers. "Just like you."

She felt a shiver run down her spine, but held his gaze. "I'm not sure what you mean."

He straightened, a challenge in his eyes. "You'll find out soon enough."

With that, he turned and walked away, leaving Nandini with a whirlwind of emotions.

Evening, at the music lounge

Manik sat alone, strumming his guitar absentmindedly. His mind was a mess of thoughts, all centered around Nandini. She was unlike anyone he'd ever met—reserved yet strong, shy yet unyielding.

Mukti Vardhan entered, a bottle of water in hand. "You're brooding."

He looked up, a rare vulnerability in his eyes. "She's... different."

Mukti sat beside him, her tone teasing. "Manik Malhotra, intrigued by a girl? That's new."

He chuckled, shaking his head. "She's not like the others."

Mukti nodded, understanding. "Be careful. Different can be dangerous."

Meanwhile, in Nandini's dorm

Nandini sat by the window, the cool breeze brushing against her face. Her mind replayed the day's events, especially her interactions with Manik. There was something about him—something dark, intense, and magnetic.

Navya entered, a bowl of popcorn in hand. "Movie night?"

Nandini smiled, grateful for the distraction. "Absolutely."

As the movie played, Nandini couldn't shake off the feeling that her life was about to change in ways she couldn't even imagine.
