The party had ended a while ago, and the hallways of Hogwarts were quieter now, save for the occasional murmur of students heading back to their dorms. I was walking back toward Gryffindor Tower with Hermione, still buzzing from the night, when I suddenly heard a familiar voice.
"Diana."
I stopped in my tracks, the chill of the corridor seeping into my bones as I turned around. Draco was standing there, looking as sharp and controlled as ever. His blond hair was slightly disheveled, and his pale blue eyes were intense—like he had been searching for me.
"Draco," I muttered, my stomach flipping. The last thing I needed right now was another one of his lectures.
He took a step closer, his gaze flickering over my outfit. "You've been at that ridiculous party for hours. And with who exactly?"
I glanced at Hermione, who was pretending not to listen. "I was with Fred and George. They're harmless."
"Harmless?" Draco's voice dropped, his tone colder than usual. He crossed his arms, his jaw tightening. "You don't know what kind of people they are, Diana."
I rolled my eyes, exasperated. "They're fine. They're just... Fred and George."
He took another step forward, and this time, there was a touch of something I couldn't quite read in his voice. "Listen, I know you think you can just have fun with whoever you want, but those kinds of people... they're not like you. They don't understand what it means to be responsible, or careful."
I felt my temper flare. "You're seriously going to lecture me about responsibility? After everything? After the way you and your family treated me?"
He flinched at my words, but he didn't back down. "I didn't treat you like that, Diana. You know that. But I do care. And I'm telling you, you need to be careful who you associate with here. Not everyone in this school is your friend, even if they seem like it."
I clenched my fists, my frustration building. "I'm not a child, Draco. I don't need you to tell me who I should or shouldn't hang out with."
His expression hardened, but there was a flash of something softer in his eyes. "I'm just trying to protect you, Diana. It's not like it was before. Things have changed, and I don't want you getting caught up in something you'll regret."
I swallowed, trying to hold my ground, but a part of me—one I didn't want to admit—was touched by his concern. "I can take care of myself."
"I know you can," he said quietly, his voice softening just a fraction. "But I still don't want you near the wrong crowd. You're... important to me."
I stared at him, the weight of his words hanging in the air. For a moment, it felt like we were back to being just brother and sister, but the bitterness from everything that had happened between us still lingered.
"Thanks, but I'll be fine," I said, my voice tight. "I'll figure things out on my own."
Draco looked at me for a moment longer, his eyes lingering, before he sighed and turned away. "Just be careful, okay? I don't want to see you hurt."
"Draco," I started, my voice quieter now, but firm. "If you want to see me happy... stay away from me. Really stay away."
He paused in his steps, but he didn't turn back to face me immediately. The air between us grew thick with unspoken things, like everything that had happened and everything we still hadn't said.
After a long moment, Draco finally spoke, his voice strained but resigned. "If that's what you want... alright."
