Gerald

For the next three months that followed my diagnosis I spent most of my time at home. I had read twenty seven books, finished five TV series and eaten probably the equivalent of twelve whole pizzas in the time that I'd been home. Each day Stiles would come in and try to figure out what exactly I could not remember so that he could try his best to repair it. Although he was just trying to help, the talk about what I had forgotten just made my head pound after a short amount of time so really I could only learn things in increments of around ten minutes, fifteen at most.

I had seen Liam a few times, the level of intensity of the headaches I had around him had become a lot tamer then they'd been before. However most of our encounters really only consisted of him ringing my doorbell with Scott by his side looking for Stiles on full moons. We would exchange hellos and kind smiles, ask how each other's summers were going, then Stiles would trip down the stairs due to untied shoelaces, I would roll my eyes, Stiles would jolt up, give me a hug, and head out and Liam would send a quick wave before I closed the door and went back to my laptop. I was glad that Liam and I were at the very least acquainted with each other considering how good things have been going something terrible was bound to happen soon enough. I wasn't going to pretend that I didn't feel some sort of energy when he was around me however I was not going to ever bring it up. The feeling that runs through me in his presence is indescribable and in a way it almost felt dangerous. I know now that when something seems dangerous it's best to stay away.

During the time school had ended to now my powers had been put on the back burner since using them was no longer crucial to my everyday life. Every day I could physically feel them getting weaker and weaker however there weren't necessarily many things I could practice on besides the stray cat that always came to the door at 4:32 pm for some tuna. That cat has a great future ahead of him.

On the days that I manage to pull myself out of bed and put on actual pants and a t-shirt without a stain I usually only ventured to a little diner near the edge of town that had amazing burgers, or to the public library to find a book to replace the one I had just finished. Today was one of those days.

By now I was a regular at the library, I could tell by how the ladies at the front desk greeted me whenever I entered the building. I smiled and returned Mrs. Barnes and Mrs. Sampson's hushed hello's as I journeyed into the maze of book cases in search for a novel I had yet to read. As I entered the familiar row of books I went down the line skipping over the ones I had already seen. However one book stuck out in particular. It was dark and I had never seen it before in that shelf nor had I even heard of it. Wedging it out of its place I held it in my hands. The cover was slightly creepy with two steam-punk men in masks staring blankly to each side. Above their heads the title read in block letters

A terrifying tale of science fiction and horror

THE DREAD DOCTORS

Out of curiosity of the story that lay printed on the slightly yellowed pages I decided to give it a shot, so with book in hand I swerved through the maze of books to the back of the room where I normally sat on the days I came to the library. It was always quiet and peaceful, no one ever wandered this far back because the only books surrounding it were dated Encyclopedias. There was one chair that rested in the corner, it was light brown leather that had been worn down over the years and it was large enough for me to put my legs up onto which I appreciated. I had named the chair Gerald since during my period of seclusion these past three months he'd really been my only friend. As I came around the corner of the last shelf of Encyclopedias I stopped suddenly confused at why there was a person sitting on Gerald that was not myself. I took a moment

"I can't believe Gerald is cheating on me..." I mumbled under my breath. The faint sound of my voice in a usually silent area caused the boy that was sitting down to look up towards me. He was attractive with dirty blonde hair, and bright blue eyes. He looked to be around sixteen or seventeen years of age. His face was kind and fairly innocent the only thing even a little harsh being his indented cheekbones. I broke the silence awkwardly asking

"Who are you and why are you with Gerald?"

He squinted his eyes at me, obviously confused.

"Excuse me?" his voice was low but soft as he continued to look at me oddly.

"The chair, it's named Gerald and you're sitting in it and... I'm sorry it's just... that's my spot."

He let out a small laugh and closed his copy of 'The Great Gatsby' standing up from Gerald and keeping eye contact with me. "You know this is a public library." He laughed.

"I'm not an idiot blondie." I commented taking my seat.

"Well you did name a chair."

I scowled at him and opened my book, expecting him to leave but I guess my psychic abilities were really weak because he stood still his eyes still trained on me.

"I'm sorry do you need something?" I spat but his sly grin just grew. I fought the urge to smile as well, his action becoming seemingly contagious.

"My name's Ben it's nice to meet you." He held out a hand which I shook cautiously

"Stella."

"Can I call you Stell?"

"I'd rather you not."

I pulled my hand out of his and looked at him with a questioning stare. "I'm sorry do I know you?"

He shook his head "I just moved here so I'm assuming you don't."

I nodded. Leaning down next to me he grabbed his tan backpack and put his book inside.

"I guess I will see you around then Stella. I hope you and Gerald will be very happy together."

My fight to not smile ended and I cracked a small smirk as he walked back into the rows of Encyclopedias.

I shifted my head downwards and opened up the worn book to the first page.
