The night is heavy around us, every corner we turn casting a deeper shadow. Cass moves with purpose, her every step calculated, while I follow, the weight of my past pressing heavily on my chest. The distant rumble of vehicles is growing nearer, and the tension between us only builds.

Cass leads me to a narrow, underground tunnel entrance hidden behind a stack of old crates. The air smells of damp concrete, a musty scent that clings to the walls.

“This is the only way in,” Cass says, pulling a flashlight from her belt and flicking it on. The beam cuts through the darkness, illuminating the narrow passage ahead.

“What’s in there?” I ask, a knot forming in my stomach. “What is The Vault?”

Cass pauses, her expression hardening. “The Vault isn’t just a building—it’s a containment facility. It was designed to hold things no one should ever have access to. The program was supposed to be contained there, dormant. But it got out of control.” She glances at me, her eyes sharp. “You were the safeguard. Your mind was supposed to be the fail-safe. But something changed.”

My chest tightens, my pulse quickening. “What do you mean, something changed?”

Cass doesn’t answer directly. Instead, she gestures for me to follow her into the tunnel. The darkness swallows us whole as we move deeper, the sound of our footsteps echoing off the stone walls.

“We’re almost there,” Cass says, her voice carrying the weight of something unspoken.

As we continue down the winding tunnel, I feels the oppressive silence closing in around us. Each step feels like it takes us deeper into a place we should have never entered. My mind races—What did I do in the past? What’s waiting for me in The Vault?

Finally, we reach the end of the tunnel. A massive steel door looms before us, embedded in the thick stone walls. Cass pulls a small device from her pocket—an access card—and slides it into a slot near the door.

There’s a low hum, and then the door slowly begins to open, revealing a vast underground facility.

I step through the door, my eyes adjusting to the dimly lit interior. Rows of steel cabinets, monitors, and data servers line the walls. The air is cold, sterile. It feels like a place where secrets are buried—and where no one should ever find them.

"This is it," Cass says quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. "This is where everything started."

We move through the facility, our footsteps muffled by the thick metal floor. My heart pounds in my chest as I take in the rows of cabinets, the sterile machinery—everything feels like a cold, calculated reminder of my purpose.

At the far end of the room, there's a large control panel, blinking softly in the dark. Cass heads toward it, fingers flying over the keys.

"We need to access the mainframe," she says. "It holds the last remaining files on the program. We need to shut it down."

I watche her, heart racing. "What happens if we can't shut it down?"

Cass doesn't look up. "Then you’ll lose yourself, Rowan. And the world will lose whatever’s left of you."

Before I can respond, a sudden alarm begins to blare through the facility.

The walls shake, the flashing red lights casting an eerie glow across the room.

"They’ve found us." Cass’s voice is filled with urgency. “We don’t have much time.”

My mind whirls as we race toward the control panel. There’s no time to think, no time to question what’s at stake. Only the growing certainty that I'm about to learn everything I was never meant to know.

As Cass begins to type, the door to the control room slams open with a deafening bang.

A group of men in dark suits rushes in—heavily armed, their eyes cold and determined.

“Step away from the console.” The leader’s voice is firm, carrying an unmistakable authority.

Cass pulls out her weapons, but I can see the hesitation in her eyes. We're outnumbered.

"You won't make it out alive," the leader says, his voice devoid of emotion. "And neither will Rowan."

I step forward, adrenaline surging through them. “I’ll make it out. I’ll choose what happens next.”
