"I CANT BELIEVE WE'RE finally getting to go on holiday together." Taeri celebrated as she turned to look at the girl sitting beside her, both of their freshly tan legs dangling in the warm temperatures of the large swimming pool that was placed in the Lee family's backyard.
Haneul nodded her head whilst a beaming smile sprung up onto her face. "I know right, it's crazy." She stated — reminiscing all the times the two girls had dreamed and planned out their future plans to go away on holiday together, not realising how soon it would come true.
It was almost a tradition for Haneul and her family to go on a summer vacation to the Amalfi coast in Italy. They went every year and stayed for the whole month of July - then when they'd return, Taeri got to hear about all of the fun stories and memories they had created there — wishing to be apart of it one day.
And fortunately for Taeri, this summer both of her parents' work schedule was filled to the brim — leaving them no time to spend the summer air with their daughter..
And once Haneul heard about this news, she instantly informed her own parents and begged for them to let Taeri join their family holiday — and surprisingly, they said yes.
"This means endless sleepovers for a whole month." Haneul excitedly exclaimed, "we need to go shopping for matching swimsuits." She suggested and Taeri's face instantly lit up at their plans.
The two girls conversation was cut short when a familiar male walked through the back gate, black sunglasses resting on the bridge of his nose as he looked undoubtedly high and disheveled.
Haneul groaned at the sight and rolled her eyes. "Heeseung, did you smoke weed again?" She angrily questioned. "Mums going to kill you." Her voice came out in a whisper yell — but still loud enough for the high boy to hear.
His face scrunched up in a wince while of of his hands came up to dramatically cover one of his ears. "Then keep your mouth shut and she won't have to know." He warned through his gritted teeth.
The hungover boy hesitantly glanced over at Taeri, sending her a quick nod and a thin lipped smile in replacement of actually finding words to say 'hello.'
Lee Heeseung, was the nineteen year old brother to Lee Haneul, and not so long ago he attended the same high school as the girls before recently graduating. Back then he was easily one of the most popular boys in his year group — his perfectly sculpted face stealing the attention of anyone who crossed paths with him in the hallway.
Taeri had even heard a few stories about how he'd slept with nearly every girl in his year and that he was going for a record, she'd also heard that he often bunked off class to either drink alcohol or smoke weed — which was confirmed by the strong, yet somehow addictive scent that followed him.
Yet, Haneul denied the sleeping around rumours, stating that her brother's not that kind of guy and that it's just people gasping for attention.
And truthfully, Taeri wanted to believe her. But it was hard when she'd constantly be met with the sight of Heeseung pinning a new girl up against the school lockers and roughly making out with them every morning.
Since graduating, Heeseung had grown about three inches in height — which according to Haneul, he hadn't stop bragging about. He even bleached his hair blonde and supposedly got a tattoo — but Taeri was yet to find out where on his body it was..
Heeseung was naturally distant, him finding more fun in video games and staying in his room than social interactions and spending time with his sister or guests that came over and visit the house.
It was the unspoken rule of 'friend-code' that siblings were off limits to one another. And frankly speaking, it didn't bother Taeri one bit, due to her and Heeseung hardly ever speaking any more than two words to each other.
When she first met him she thought he was one of the most handsome guys she had ever seen. But then she saw and heard how many girls he'd gotten with and that he had smoked a lot of pot, so then he just became 'Haneul's older brother' — the guy who Taeri will also be going on holiday with, living under the same roof with, eating dinner with for a whole month.
"My mum said that if she catches the scent of weed on him again that he wouldn't be able to come to Italy." Haneul giggled and flicked the pool water with her feet. "And the guest room, where you'll be staying is right opposite his, so good luck if you smell pot through the night."
Taeri groaned in annoyance and let out a soft laugh. "I'll sleep with a pillow over my face." She joked making the girl beside her chuckle and nudge her arm playfully.
"Are you excited for the last day of school tomorrow?" Taeri wondered as she leaned down to touch the cold water, rubbing it up her arm as she glanced back at Haneul.
The Lee girl nodded excitedly and leaned back on her hands. "I think I'm going to ask out Sooji.." she pondered, making Taeri's eyes widen as a teasing smirk lit up onto her face.
"You should." She sang out and playfully pushed the flustered girl. "She definitely likes you back, I've seen her staring at you during gym."
Lee Haneul and Song Taeri met in seventh grade and have been friends ever since, the two becoming inseparable and insanely close.
Around five months into their friendship, Haneul confessed to Taeri that she liked girls and wasn't as interest in guys. She explained how she was afraid to tell Taeri due to being scared that it would ruin their friendship or make her see Haneul differently. But the Song girl quickly reassured her and didn't think too much on the subject — saying that 'it was normal' and no different to her liking boys.
Ever since then, the two told each other everything and trusted the other with every little secret. They phoned each other while sat on the toilet, face timed when in the shower, waxed each others legs, set each other up on blind dates and even laughed at cringey fanfics together during sleepovers. Secrets and privacy just wasn't a thing within their friendship.
"What if she rejects me? I've liked her for so long that I don't think I'll be able to handle the heartbreak." Haneul whined and shook her head in distress — only making Taeri laugh and place a hand of reassurance on her shoulder.
"I don't think she will, but even if she does there are still plenty of other girls out there waiting to be asked out by you."
Haneul thanked the brunette girl before getting up and grabbing towels for the pair of them, the two making plans to watch some cheesy romcon and stuff their faces with popcorn before it became Taeri's time to go home.
"What about you? Are you planning on confessing to anyone before summer break starts.." Haneul edged, wiggling her brows as she grinned at the unimpressed girl standing in front of her.
Taeri's face deadpanned as she rolled her eyes, "you know I don't like anyone enough to go ahead and ask them out." She exaggerated with a heavy sigh, wrapping the lilac towel around her shoulders and stepping into her white slides. "Besides, I don't chase, I attract." She joked and instantly cringed at herself when Haneul didn't spare her a singular laugh.
"Mhmm.. what, not even Sunoo?" She teased and watched the Song girls face scrunch up in shock and confusion.
She quirked a brow and tilted her head to left, "just because he asked me out at the start of the year doesn't mean that he still likes me, or that I should ask him back in return." Taeri explained creating a laugh to slip from Haneul's mouth as the two girls made their way inside the house.
"I guess we'll just see what summer break holds.."
