Chapter 1 ~ Attacks

The sound of shooting echoed in the distance, and I froze.

Everything was slow while Harry and Charlotte started running, pulling me along with them. We were heading towards the exit, where hopefully the leaches would be soon with our car.

I heard another loud crack of a gun, its bullet almost scraping my knee. The shooter definitely wasn't alone.

"Who is it?" Harry's scream could barely be heard over the sound of shouting behind us.

"I don't know," My stutter couldn't be controlled. Not knowing what we were up against scared me, and we finally begun to near the gate to leave the grave yard.

Charlotte burst through the gate, and once we arrived in front of the building I saw our car turn into the front. We sprinted towards the car, with the doors already open. Harry jumped inside, and I saw the Vampires beckoning us with their hands inside.

Charlotte was inches close to the car before another shot echoed in my ears and Charlotte screamed. Dropping to the floor, she held her leg that begun to bleed intensely. I swore under my breath, watching Ronald jumping out of the car and scooping Charlotte in his arms. He looked up at me, and widened his eyes.

"Behind you!"

I turned hastily, seeing a person in all black swipe at me with a stake. I lowered my body, dodging their hit. I couldn't make out who it was, their faces covered with a sack-like mask. I saw others approaching, dressed the same. I took out my blade from my boot, something I rarely use. It was pure black steel, but wooden at the tip like a stake.

I swung it towards them, feeling contact as they dropped their weapon in pain. I kicked their abdomen, pushing them backwards. I heard everyone in the car shouting at me to run, but I knew it was impossible. People were jumping at me from right and left, barely giving me time to strike.

I heard someone leaving the car, helping me fight them off. Someone kicked behind my knee, forcing me to the ground with a cry as I felt a sharp cut across my collar-bone. I swivelled around, swiping upwards before they could slash be from behind. I kicked outwards, forcing the person on the ground and jumping on them with my stake drawn high. Pulling their mask off and ready to strike, I widened my eyes in surprise. It was Rachel.

Rachel looked the same as last time I saw her, except her brown hair was now cut short and her blue eyes much less innocent than before. She snarled up at me, swiping towards my face. I jumped away in shock, feeling a tug on my sleeves from behind me. I turned, seeing Peter's blue-green eyes meeting with mine.

"Let's go," He said calmly, despite everything. I ran with him to the car, jumping inside. Everyone was now in their seats, and Josias stepped on the gas . We left quickly, and drove endlessly to make sure we were not followed.

I glanced down at Charlotte, who was wincing in pain as Margret tended to her wounds. I put my hand on the bleeding source, knowing it was useless since I hadn't been able to use my Witch abilities since I first shifted.

"Looks like we're lucky," Margret broke the silence. "It seems like it's just a graze, the blood loss might become an issue."

"Actually," Harry's voice sounded from the very back. "Shifters have a high tolerance to this sort of stuff, so it should be fine."

It was true, Shapeshifters did have a in-humane amount of blood supply and tolerance. Although, it was still awkward when we brought up our differences in the group. We tried to ignore touchy subjects for a while.

"Thanks," Margret was done being bandaged and could sit up as it healed. "Thanks for helping me, Ronald."

He gave her a shy smile, "No problem. You guys can call me Ron, by the way."

It was rare we heard much from Ron, but I was happy to hear he was finally getting comfortable with us now.

The rest of the journey was silent, and I breathed slowly with my eyes closed. That was the last time we were putting ourselves in risk again, I was stupid for even thinking it would be safe.

I turned to look at Harry, who was looking down silently. His blue eyes had tears rolling from them slightly, and he nervously raked his fingers through his dark hair.

"Harry," I whispered. It wasn't like we had much privacy in the cramped car, but I wanted to give some sort of comfort. "I'm sorry."

"You have nothing to apologize for," Harry muttered as he raised his glance to me. "It's those things that attacked us at Jase's funeral who should be sorry."

I nodded, "I promise I'll find out who they are."

Charlotte shook her head, her face more pale as she rested her head and her red hair sprawled against the chair. "Whoever they were, they were not a fan of us."

"It could have been anyone," Josias said. "Our royals, your elders, or -"

"Rachel," I interrupted. I hadn't spoken to Josias in weeks, but I decided to ignore that for now. "The person I was on before I got in the car was Rachel."

"Well that's not great," Peter muttered.

Charlotte sighed, "Rachel has worked with everyone behind everyone else's backs. It honestly doesn't surprise me that she would join in on a hunt to kill us."

Rachel was someone I trusted, her family have always worked closely with mine. Her humans family basically protected ours, they made sure that the identity of shifters were never exposed and that other humans never got suspicious of us as Hybrids. It was a hard job, covering up for a bunch of vampire hunters and shapeshifting royalty - a job that Rachel had been trusted with since she was a child. My father trusted her, even I had respect for her. Until she betrayed me for vampires like Peter and murdered Jason. I let out a long breath, not needing this any more.

"We can't trust anyone."

We finally arrived at the cabin, and we all burst out of the car. Rotters Cabin rested in the middle of the woods, surrounded by trees and a long lake running down like a staircase beside it. The sound of California's chirping birds was music to our ears, and if you looked out over the masses of trees you would see the beauty of Big Sur.

Knowing that we had somewhere to go without worrying about anyone finding us was a relief. Harry, despite being quiet a lot, gave us the address to his Great Aunt's cabin. He said that no one knew about his family well enough to find them, especially his Aunt's cabin that she rarely went to. If it was somewhere any of the rest of us could live, we would definitely be tracked down immediately. Luckily for us, Harry and Jason weren't brought up like most Hybrids. They were almost human.

I sighed, looking up at the arch of the cabin's doors. The stone steps lead up to the surprisingly big cabin, and the wooden walls felt hard but couldn't break. At first, the leaches were a little worried about the wood. It looks like a giant stake. But once inside, there was hardly any wood to worry about.

I turned once more before going inside, looking at the horizon and happy to feel safe for once.

I hoped it stayed that way.

(A/N)

Hey guys hoped you liked that short-ish one :)

I just got a twitter account (author_ninja) to basically help Desire To Kill win a watty. If you guys could help out that would mean the world! Just do the same as one of my first tweets by simply giving the name of the story and using the #MyWattysChoice ( from the top of my memory ) starting on July 26th for a week. I'm retweeting anyone who's nominating the story!

Oh and also, when would you guys like updates? Since I'm doing it on a Sunday right now maybe Sundays? Or it could be two days, but that's up to your comments I guess. For now it's once a week (but I think I'll change it to Mondays soon because it makes more sense).

Question of the day:  How do you think some characters have changed throughout the series so far?

Thanks guys!
