She loved sunsets. He was more of a sunrise person. The breaking of dawn had always invigorated him but what he had never admitted to anyone is that the dawn reminded him of her. All aflame with pinks and oranges with a ball of gold that matched her eyes.
Yet here he was, sitting on the pier with her watching the sunset.
The noise of the carnival drifted from behind them, mixing with the sounds of the ocean waves lapping against the concrete supports of the pier. Revali knew their friends were still somewhere in the mess of people and rides, probably barely even noticing he was gone. Which was good, because he had wanted to get away from all the ignorant people and be alone.
He glanced at Mipha. He didn't mind if she was there, barging into what was supposed to be his alone time. She had run into him as he was making his way for the exit, asking where he was going and then asking if she could go with him. His one weakness was saying no to her and so here they now sat on the pier, watching the sunset while Mipha nibbled on a fried donut she had bought.
"Hey, Revali."
"Hm."
She dug her phone out of her pocket. "Will you smile for me?"
In response, he pulled his own phone and held it up. "Sure. You smile too."
This got her laughing which caused a stupid grin to crack on his face. He lowered his phone and she scooted over next to him, lightly leaning on his shoulder and flipping the camera towards them. She flashed a brilliant smile, the one that made all others pale in comparison and took a few pictures of them.
She scooted back to her spot (much to Revali's dismay). "Thank you. This lighting's beautiful, I just had to take advantage of it."
He couldn't deny that. The setting sun made her glow, reflecting in her eyes and making her look like...well, like a goddess.
Revali shook his head slightly and looked back at the sun, forcing down the rush of heat threatening to erupt on his face.
"Revali?"
"Yes, Mipha?"
She looked over at him, phone still in one hand and a piece of fried donut in the other. "You weren't even looking at the camera here, look."
She showed him the screen. While she had been looking at the camera with her sweet smile, he had been looking at her, smiling like...like someone in love.
He raised an eyebrow before looking back up at her. She was chewing her bite of donut and she swallowed quickly, asking, "What?"
"Ah, nothing. I just got distracted by your hair, is all." He lied.
She nodded slowly, slipping the phone back into her pocket. "About that actually, I was thinking of cutting it shorter. What are your thoughts?"
"Well, I personally like your hair long, but..."
"But what?"
He made an embarrassed noise and turned away. "Nothing, never mind."
As to be expected, she did not "never mind". No, instead she started poking him in the side. " What is it? Tell me, Revali! Tellmetellmetellme--"
"Goddess! Since when are you so persistent?" He flicked her hand with his, causing her to laugh. "I was going to say that you'd look beautiful no matter what you do so..."
Her eyes widened and he looked away, feeling that inevitable blush take over his face. After a loaded moment, she asked, voice small, "Is that what you truly think?"
Without looking at her, he nodded. "Yeah. You're always beautiful."
Her hand landed on his cheek and she gently turned his head to face her. "Will you say that again?"
She was staring him dead in the eyes. He took a shaky breath, gathered his courage, and whispered, "You're always beautiful, Mipha."
Before he could blink, her other hand was on his face and she pulled him to her and kissed him.
It was gentle and sweet, like everything she did. She held his face gently and her lips pressed lightly against his, like she was afraid he would shatter or simply disappear. She pulled back far too quickly, eyes half open and staring at his lips. Her gaze flickered up to his eyes and the prettiest blush spread across her face. "I'm sorry, I should have asked before--"
He put a hand at the base of her neck, effectively cutting her off as she stared at him. He took her in for a moment before leaning over and kissing her, without any hesitation. She looked startled for just a moment before her eyes slid shut and she wrapped her arms around his neck.
He closed his eyes too, his other hand settling on her hip. She tasted like vanilla chapstick and the fried donut she had been eating. Her lips were soft and without even thinking, Revali made a contented noise at the back of his throat. She sighed happily in response, his fingers sliding into his hair.
He only pulled back when he couldn't breathe anymore, eyes fluttering half open. When she looked up at him, any air he had managed to regain was completely knocked out of him. She wore a slight smile on her face. "I...have wanted to do that for a long time."
Overwhelmed, he pulled her head to his chest and buried his face in her hair. "You're beautiful in every way, Mipha," he murmured. "Every way."
She hummed happily and she slid onto his lap. They sat like that for a while, the sun eventually sinking below the water. Stars where beginning to show and Mipha turned to look up at them. 'Do you know why I like sunsets so much?"
He shook his head, smiling. "Why?"
She looked back to his face and wearing that brilliant smile, flicked one of his braids. "The colors of the approaching night remind me of you."
Happiness shot through him and he pulled her into a tight hug. "Don't ever leave me, Mipha."
"I'm not going anywhere," she pulled back after a moment. "Although we really should head back to the carnival and find our friends."
He groaned. "I'd rather not. Can't we just stay here?"
"No," she suddenly looked around. "Oh goodness, I completely forgot we were in public!"
Usually that was something he would care about, but right now he didn't. "So?"
"Oh Goddess, Revali! We might have traumatized some poor child!"
"So what? Let them be traumatized."
She was clearly trying to hold back a laugh. "Revali!"
He smirked and shrugged, standing up and offering her his hand. "Lets go then."
She shook her head and laughed, taking his hand and letting him pull her up. They began walking back to the carnival and didn't let go.
