Chapter Four

For a moment, John wondered if that was how Mr. Wilson felt when he betrayed the rebellion for his daughter.

Sophie flipped through files and books, looking for any clue to acquiring regular human souls.

All those researches talked about was second soul.

Perhaps people in the past weren't much different from today, all they ever cared about was gaining power.

"Sophie?" John called her. "I think I find something you will be interested in."

"What is it?"

"It was an attack that happened 9 years ago. It said the hollowgast was trapped with someone called Perplexus Anomalous and some guards. Despite the guards keep attacking the hollow, it just ignored them and went for Perplexus." John said.

"And Perplexus wasn't the closest to the creature?" Sophie questioned.

"No. According to the only guard that survived the encounter, all the guards were shielding Perplexus with their body." John answered.

"Almost like it was hunting a specific target." Sophie said. "Any similar cases?"

"Another case is John Parkins, the leader of Los Californios clan, similar things happened, the hollow ignored everyone else and went for him directly. Now that I think about it, such things seemed to happen a lot when they were hunting someone important to our side. Clan leaders, ymbrynes, famous cartographers, people with power or respected by us." John said.

"That's curious." Sophie said. "Maybe they are more sentient than we thought?"

"I don't know." John replied, "They still act like mindless killers most of the time. Those seemed more like exceptions, not regularity."

"That means there is someone controlling them when they are hunting specific target." Sophie concluded in quiet horror.

"How?" John asked.

"A librarian." She replied shortly, "I need to talk to Francesca now" And she hurried towards the exit.

When Sophie was gone. John got up from his chair and made his way to the cart that was labeled "To Be Sorted". If it wasn't sorted and locked up yet, they may still have a chance.

John pulled a white file out from the pile and scanned through it.

Criminal Record

Name: Declan Palmer

Crime: Attempted Criminal Trespassing (Talon Base)

Currently held in Woodford Prison 104 cell waiting for court session to begin

"And there we go." He said to himself.

After a few minutes, Miss Bittern finally looked up from the files Sophie brought her.

"So you're suggesting they are capable of focusing on specific targets because the cases you picked here?" the ymbryne asked. "It's rather unusual, I admit, but there should be more... logical conclusions."

"I'm not saying they can focus on specific targets. I think someone else is controlling them. Someone is doing the hunting for them." Sophie explained. "And when John was caught by the hollowgast, Penny distracted whoever was controlling it."

"There haven't been a peculiar like that for a long time." Miss Bittern considered.

"A very powerful librarian can do it." Sophie said.
