What if she's transphobic? I hope she's not uncomfortable with me. What should I do if she's mean? I wonder if she... I sigh.
I can't bring myself to open the door. The keys are frozen in my hand. It will be fine. Just open the door. What's the worst that could- Before I finish my thought, the door opens..
"Can I help you...?" She says as she blows and pops some bubble gum and raises a brow.
"I- uh- you see, I'm assigned to this dorm. I'm..."
"Well you've got the wrong one." She starts to slam the door but I catch it and keep it open.
"NO!"
"This is a girls only dorm area, so tell me why you," she waves her hand at me "a boy, are here?! Are you just a pervert?"
I sigh in response and try to gain an ounce of confidence "I'm... trans. Transmasc." The silence is so long and awkward. I still haven't become like some trans people, where they are perfectly confident expressing that they're trans. I don't know, maybe it's because I was homeschooled in a Christian family, but it's just so humiliating. It's like, hey, I actually have a vagina but I'm insecure about it so I pretend to be a guy to forget about it. That's so much information to give a stranger.
She has a surprised expression, caught off guard. She shifts her weight to her other leg "Oh... really?" I hold up my keys that have the dorm letters on it. She nods in response, still skeptical and reluctantly opens the door for me to walk in with my luggage.
"I'm so sorry if I'm making you uncomfortable, I tried getting one of the boys dorms but they wouldn't let me since my birth certifi-"
"No, it's ok. I'm not uncomfortable. It's just... not what I was expecting. Dorming with a man." Something about her referring to me as a man makes my stomach feel weightless and fluttery and I just stare at her. She glares at me in response and leans back against her dresser.
Suddenly I forgot all the rules of meeting someone. What questions do you really ask? What's your favorite color? At what point do you start asking about their life story?
She sighed. "What's your name?" Right, that's what you ask.
"Nathan! And yours?" I was proud of the name I'd chosen after transitioning. I figured it wasn't too popular in the trans community, and it was far from my deadname.
"Azalea." What a beautiful name. Speaking of which, I just realized how attractive she is. Especially her nose.. She has a silver septum piercing and a few freckles, which makes it look somehow cute.
I take in a breath. "I suppose I'll start unpacking then." She nods back, and we begin to do just that.
