Inside the Last Drop, the bar felt more alive than Natalie had ever imagined. Its warm, chaotic energy hummed in the air as patrons shouted over clinking glasses and music. Vi guided Natalie to a booth near the back, a private corner where they could catch up without interruption. Caitlyn followed close behind, her usual composed demeanor hiding the faintest hint of a smile.
Jinx plopped down beside Natalie, fiddling with her braided hair. "So, spill the beans! How'd you get back? Did you wrestle a hexcore? Fight a Piltover scientist?"
Natalie chuckled, shaking her head. "Nothing quite that dramatic. A scientist back home helped me. We managed to reopen a portal."
"Smart friends, huh?" Vi smirked, leaning back against the worn booth. "Good. You're gonna need all the brains you can get to keep up with us."
Caitlyn rested her hand on Natalie's wrist, her touch gentle. "We weren't sure we'd ever see you again. The night you disappeared... it hit all of us hard."
Natalie nodded, her throat tightening. "I didn't mean to leave. I didn't know how to stay." She glanced down at the bracelet. "But I think part of me always believed I'd find my way back."
Jinx grinned, reaching over to flick the bracelet. "Told you this would come in handy. Lucky charm, huh?"
A New Threat
As the night wore on, Natalie started to relax, falling into the rhythm of the group. Yet, beneath the laughter and the comfort of reunion, a subtle tension lingered.
"Things've been... tense around here lately," Vi admitted, her tone growing serious. "There's been some trouble between Zaun and Piltover again."
"More than usual?" Natalie asked, her brow furrowing.
Caitlyn nodded. "Yes. A new faction has risen in Zaun, claiming to represent the undercity's best interests. But their methods have been violent—too violent."
Jinx snorted. "Yeah, 'cause blowing up buildings is totally helpful."
Natalie frowned. "Do you know who's leading them?"
Vi exchanged a glance with Caitlyn. "Not yet. But whoever they are, they've got resources. And they're stirring up resentment against Piltover, making it harder for anyone to keep the peace."
Caitlyn's gaze sharpened. "It's only a matter of time before things boil over into a full-scale conflict."
Natalie's stomach twisted. She had come back expecting to pick up where she left off, but it was clear the stakes were higher now.
Finding Her Place
In the days that followed, Natalie began to carve out a place for herself in Zaun. She helped Caitlyn gather intel on the new faction, using her unique perspective to offer insights no one else could. Her knowledge of Piltover's upper society—gleaned from watching Arcane—proved invaluable.
Jinx, meanwhile, took it upon herself to show Natalie "the ropes." This mostly involved chaotic adventures through Zaun's labyrinthine streets, dodging enforcers and tinkering with explosives. Despite the danger, Natalie couldn't help but laugh at Jinx's antics.
Vi, ever the protective older sister, kept a close eye on Natalie. She often walked her back to the hideout after long days, their conversations ranging from lighthearted teasing to deeper, more personal topics.
"Why'd you really come back?" Vi asked one night as they strolled through Zaun's dimly lit streets.
Natalie hesitated before answering. "Because you're my family now. All of you. And I couldn't stand the thought of not being here to help."
Vi smirked, but her eyes softened. "Good. 'Cause we're not letting you leave again."
A Glimpse of the Enemy
The first real encounter with the new faction came unexpectedly. Natalie had been helping Caitlyn investigate a warehouse rumored to be a supply hub for the group. As they crept through the shadows, a loud explosion rocked the building, sending crates and debris flying.
"Ambush!" Vi shouted, leaping to shield Natalie and Caitlyn.
Through the smoke, a figure emerged—a tall, masked individual clad in sleek, menacing armor. Their voice was distorted, but their words were clear.
"You shouldn't have come here, enforcers. Zaun doesn't need your interference."
Vi growled, stepping forward. "Zaun doesn't need your chaos, either."
The fight that followed was intense, with the masked leader displaying an unsettling blend of strength and precision. Natalie, crouched behind a stack of crates, felt helpless as Vi and Caitlyn battled fiercely.
But as the masked figure retreated, they locked eyes with Natalie for a brief moment. It was enough to send a chill down her spine.
A Mission to Protect
Back at the hideout, the group regrouped, their injuries tended to but their spirits shaken.
"That was no ordinary zealot," Caitlyn said, wincing as she bandaged her arm. "They were trained—highly trained."
Natalie sat silently, replaying the encounter in her mind. That brief moment of eye contact had felt... familiar, though she couldn't place why.
"We'll figure out who they are," Vi said firmly, her determination unshaken. "And we'll stop them before they tear Zaun apart."
Natalie nodded, her resolve hardening. She had returned to Zaun because she felt a connection to this world, to these people. Now, she had a new purpose: to protect them from the dangers threatening their home.
As she looked around the room—at Vi's strength, Caitlyn's intellect, and Jinx's unpredictable brilliance—Natalie knew one thing for certain.
She was where she belonged.
