I didn't know these people well enough to tell voices from faces or voices from voices but that didn't matter. I followed a wall to a door, it opened up revealing a fully lit room over. I looked back to the rest of the room only to spot a limp body just next to a locker.
The other two noticed it too, I rushed over, holding a finger to their neck. No pulse. I shivered. There was no sign of injury, no teeth marks or blood or anything. Whatever killed them just, took the life from them.
So this is why they sent us. People who desperately wanted freedom, regardless if they were wronged or not. A chance to escape living in the hell that is our very own prison system. To send us hopeless souls a shred of belief that we could live normal lives again. After all, we had nothing left to lose.
"They're... Dead..." I proclaimed in a whisper looking up at
One of the two of my teammates gasped, putting hands up to their mouth. "I...I don't know if I can do this anymore-"
"You dumbass! They told us the risk! We could die. And you took that risk. Backing out now would be stupid" The other one, a man, grabbed the others collar roughly, yelling at her. He shoved her away, seemingly done with her display of annoyance.
"He's right. We're all in this for the same reason. Freedom." I said, looking at the corpse. It didn't reek of death.
Not in the same way ▇▇▇▇▇▇ did moments after he died. Maybe that was attributed to the metallic scent of the blood. But yet it was a sickening scent that accompanied the blood. Something disgusting. Something this body lacked.
However that thing killed them, at least it was instant.
"We have to keep going. I'll lead." I grit my teeth and stood up, walking through the door into the light.
The next couple rooms were the same. We all gathered assets and dodged the fish monsters that roamed the halls. We discovered more monsters on our path. The purple things that hid in lockers, human shaped squid hybrids that hid in the darkness, a monster that hid behind fake doors, and a giant shark that made our minds melt, at least until we opened the next door. We even managed to pick up a flashlight or two, which is how we found out about the squid things being dangerous in the first place.
We managed to all stay alive, grabbing a medkit if we spotted them. Door 46 was up ahead, all of us remained quiet, focusing on any potential sound or sight that would have alerted us to another monster. When suddenly my ears caught a slight audible wet squelching sound. I listened longer until I heard quick footsteps. I turned to the sound but it was much too late. I watched a creature that would only be described as a living wall nightmare.
It knocked the woman at the back over and just as she tried to see her assailant it opened its strange alien mouth and bit her neck. Crushing her throat in a gorey mess. I could see the life fade from her eyes right in front of me.
I instinctively stepped closer. Stomping my foot down and putting a protective arm out in front of my only alive teammate. I stared at the monster, it seemed to shrink under my glare before promptly turning and running away.
The man behind me exhaled relief. "Just you and me left huh. It's a good thing you're so alert."
I knew it was a compliment. He meant it in a good way. I was defensive and in situations like this it could be incredibly useful. But it didn't feel like a good thing.
I knelt down to my now deceased teammate. Her throat that was crushed by that monster bled out onto the light blueish gray floor. The scarlet fluid soaked into the knee part of my pants.
I have to be this defensive. I needed to be.
My mind gave me vivid flashes of moments and memories of life on the surface. Images of scenes that made me feel cold with terror. I shut my eyes tight and bit the inside of my cheek to snap myself from my thoughts. It barely worked but it was enough to get me together.
