I let out a deep sigh as I stare at the pack resting against the wall across from me. Today was the day that I would be successful and cross the parapet or die trying. I would choose to never step foot on the parapet, but my father did not give me much choice and after my mom died a few years ago I had no one in my corner.

"Ainsley let's go!" I hear a loud screech outside my door and I flinch away. My father.

I quickly lace up the boots he gave me and stood up. The boots were old, but that would work out in my favor when I cross the parapet. I won't slip as easily and I might actually have a chance of getting across it in one piece. Not that my father cares either way, he just wants to get rid of me. I think it would be more convenient if I fell off the parapet, so everyone would approach him.

I grab my bag and slowly open the door, not used to having a door. It came with the place we moved in and he didn't want to show guests just how terrible he truly is.

I walk down the stairs and see him waiting, with the Sorrengail's.

Of course. I let out a soft sigh, before putting on a fake smile for our guests. I did not want to do anything to make this family suspicious of my father, otherwise it would not end well with me.

"Ainsley! There you are. I was just telling general Sorrengail and her daughters how proud of you I am for joining the rider quadrant." My father says, smiling brightly towards me and I nod.

"Lovely to see you again." I say softly, smiling at each of them, hoping they will leave soon.

"I am happy to hear you will be joining the rider quadrant! Violet will be the last of my children to join as well." General Sorrengail says and I instantly move my gaze to Violet. Her frail body sit next to her mother, silver strands barely visible in the braid she had in.

It seemed like she had a similar condition, but hers is on in her hair. I envy that and wish mine was only in my hair and not 95% of my body. She was small and will be destroyed in the riders quadrant. I won't let that happen if I'm there to say anything about it.

"I'm glad we will be in the same year." I say, smiling slightly at the thought. While I hate my father for forcing me to join this death college, at least I will have a friend. Hopefully. I notice how Violet looks over at me and shoots me a small smile. I knew instantly she was forced to go too. At least we'll be there together.
