As Mia drifted into sleep, her mind was a whirlwind of fragmented memories and unanswered questions. She found herself back in the barn, the air thick with the scent of rain and old wood, just as it had been five years ago. It felt so real, the wooden beams and the musty hay beneath her feet.

And there was Mason. He was just as she remembered—his hazel eyes sparkling with a relaxed warmth, his brown curls falling casually over his forehead. He had that eager smile, the one that always seemed to promise adventure and excitement. But tonight, there was something different about him. His smile was tinged with desperation, his eyes wide with a pleading look she had never seen before.

"Mia, help me," he said, his voice trembling. "I need you."

She tried to move, to reach out to him, but her body felt like it was made of stone. Panic surged through her as she struggled against the invisible chains that bound her. She could see Mason's face clearly, the familiar features now twisted with an unsettling mix of anguish and accusation.

The scene shifted abruptly. The barn's warm, nostalgic glow was replaced by a cold, harsh light. Mason's expression turned pained, his eyes darkened with hurt and anger. "Why didn't you come for me?" he asked, his voice a hollow echo. "Why did you leave me behind?"

His words cut through her like a knife. She felt a wave of guilt and regret crash over her, as if she were reliving the worst moment of her life. The pain in his eyes, the betrayal, it all felt so real, so immediate. She tried to reach him, to apologize, but her body remained immobilized, her voice lost in the void.

Suddenly, everything around her seemed to close in, the walls of the barn becoming oppressive, the air stifling. Mason's hurt shifted into anger, his gaze piercing through her as if blaming her for every missed opportunity, every unspoken word from the past. The barn's comforting presence turned into a prison, and she was trapped inside, helpless.

With a jolt, Mia awoke, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Her heart pounded violently in her chest, and cold sweat clung to her skin. The darkness of her room felt oppressive, and the remnants of the nightmare lingered like a heavy fog in her mind.

She sat up abruptly, her mind racing. The barn, the nightmare, Mason's pleading face—it all felt so immediate, so urgent. She needed to do something, to act on the fear and guilt that had gripped her heart.

Her first thought was of the barn. She quickly grabbed her phone and texted her friends, letting them know she would be staying in for a bit longer, omitting any mention of the haunting dream or the cryptic message.

Desperate to act on the urgency she felt, Mia quickly grabbed a pen and scribbled a note for her mother: "Running some errands. Be back soon." The note was a lie, but a necessary one to buy her some time to deal with the overwhelming emotions and the mystery of the barn.

She emerged from her room, her movements swift and purposeful. She placed the note on the kitchen counter, her fingers lingering on the paper for a moment before she stepped back.

As she prepared to leave, her mind was already focused on the barn. She would find answers today, no matter what it took. The urgency of the dream, combined with the cryptic message, drove her determination. The past was calling her back, and she couldn't ignore it any longer.

With one last glance at the note on the fridge, Mia steeled herself for what lay ahead. The barn awaited, and she was ready to face whatever truth lay hidden within its walls.
