The rhythmic ticking of the old grandfather clock was the only sound breaking the silence of the living room. I lay curled up on the couch, my nose buried in the pages of my favorite fantasy novel. The dragons and heroes were a welcome escape from the gnawing feeling of unease that had been clinging to me for weeks.
A distant wolf howl made me shiver, though I tried to ignore it. I glanced up from my book, staring at the shadowy curtains that did little to block out the dark. My father, James, had been restless lately, his eyes darting to the windows every few minutes. My mother, Eliza, seemed increasingly withdrawn, her eyes often clouded with worry.
"Just the wind," I muttered to myself, trying to convince my racing heart. I turned my attention back to the book, but the sense of dread refused to let go.
From the kitchen came the sounds of hurried footsteps and the clatter of dishes. My older brothers, Alaric and Juno, were moving with a purpose that felt out of place in our usually calm home. Alaric glanced nervously towards the doorway.
"Is it ready?" Dad's voice cut through the tension, sounding strained and urgent.
Alaric nodded, his face set in a serious expression. "Almost. We've packed most of the essentials. But why are we leaving so suddenly?"
Dad's face was grim. "We don't have much time. They're getting closer."
Eliza's voice was a whisper, filled with dread. "We should have left days ago. The hunters won't stop until they find us."
I felt my pulse quicken as I made my way to the kitchen. "What's going on? Why are we in such a hurry?"
Dad's eyes met mine, filled with a mixture of frustration and sadness. "Astara, you need to pack a bag. We're moving tonight."
My heart pounded in my chest. "But why? What's happening?"
"You're mother, Alaric, and Juno will explain on the way," Dad said firmly. "Just pack quickly and don't ask questions right now."
I rushed to my room, my mind spinning with confusion and fear. I hastily threw clothes and essentials into a duffel bag, my hands trembling. Through the walls, I could hear muffled noises-thumps, hurried footsteps-adding to my growing anxiety.
As I zipped up my bag, I glanced at the photograph on my nightstand. It was a family portrait from years ago, with Dad's arm around Mom and my brothers looking slightly mischievous. I touched the frame gently, wondering if this was the last time I'd see my room, my home.
Minutes later, we gathered by the front door, our faces drawn and tired. Dad held a map, his finger tracing a route to Ravenswood. "It's a small town. We'll be safe there for now."
I nodded, trying to calm my racing heart. The car was packed, and Mom's hands shook as she held her growing belly-a reminder of the new life on the way. I could see the strain in her eyes as she tried to stay strong for us.
As we drove away from our old home, I glanced back at the house receding into the darkness. The familiar outline of our home grew smaller and smaller, swallowed by the night. My heart ached with every mile we put between ourselves and the place I had always known as safe.
The road to Ravenswood was winding and dark, the moon casting eerie shadows on the trees. I sat in the backseat, my thoughts a whirlwind of confusion, fear, and anticipation. The only sounds were the soft hum of the engine and the occasional murmur of my family, their voices tense and low.
"What's Ravenswood like?" I finally asked, breaking the heavy silence.
Alaric turned to look at me, his eyes filled with a rare softness. "It's a small town. Quiet. But it will do for now."
I gave my older brother an odd look. "will do for now." what the hell did he mean by that?
Knowing it was no use in asking what he meant I put in my headphones and slowly drifted off to sleep.
