I woke up to the sound of my alarm blaring in my ear, signaling the start of another day.
I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and swung my legs over the side of the bed, feeling the soft carpet beneath my feet.
After a quick shower, what was next was the everyday difficulty.
Choosing what to wear
It is a whole sport on its own which i despise
After 6 different outfit change, I headed to the kitchen to start my day with a cup of coffee.
Nescafe ya kusa min tsuro a jiki
In Baba's words 'kullum nescafe, kullum nescafe, seh kin jawo ma kanki ciwon zuciya.'
I carefully sipped,knowing i was late
But then, whats done is done abi
I stared out the window, watching the sun rise over the balcony.
I felt a sense of restlessness wash over me, a feeling that had become all too familiar lately.
As the only child of my loving parents, I'd always felt a sense of responsibility to make them proud.
And I had, graduating at the top of my class with a degree in accounting.
Now, at 24, I worked as a successful accountant in a prestigious firm, my days filled with numbers and spreadsheets.
I had a good job, great friends, and loving parents, but something was missing.
I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but I knew I needed a change.
The constant schedule was draining
I arrived at the office, greeted by the familiar faces of my coworkers.
We exchanged pleasantries, emily being as hyper as ever and sakina smiling warmly at everything said.
The day dragged on, and I found myself checking the clock every few minutes.
Finally, the hands crawled to 3 PM, and I packed up my things, eager to leave the office behind.
I arrived at the café, spotting my friends already seated at our usual table.
"Sheggs, dama ana ganinki.? Youve turned scarce kawai." Samira as usual, the blabber mouth, and funniest person ive met.
"Diyar manya kikeji." The sound of their handclap was nothing new. I rolled my eyes feeling giddy and overwhelmed about being in their presence
"I actually missed you guys." Their looks made it seem like they were ready to barf, disgusted by my words.
Amongst us, samira was the toughest and the one that talks most, ahlan being somewhere in between, then i was the quiet one, and softest too.
"Let me tell you guys something, jiya, da sedai a kiraku ace ina asibiti."
We all knew what that meant
She got in a fight
"We went to sagir's polo club, one girl decided she wanted to awaken the demons deep inside my abyss."
"Sagir?"
"Oh my god, i forgot to tell you aisha. He's the new guy im seeing. Na NNPC." My mouth made an 'oh' shape recalling him
There's a thing about our friendship
Its nice, really nice
But also draining
Especially given how much of an anti social and introverted person i am, i always appreciate their efforts of making me feel along
Just as we were getting into the conversation, a commotion at the entrance caught our attention.
A tall, imposing figure stood, scanning the room, his eyes locking onto our table.
He strode towards us, his presence commanding attention.
"Ahmad Muhammad," he introduced himself, his deep voice sending a shiver down my spine.
" I've been sent to collect the table. This area is reserved for a private meeting."
We exchanged hesitant glances, unsure of what to do.
Samira stood up, his height towering hers
"We were here first," Her voice firm but polite
Daring him to do anything stupid
Ahmad's expression didn't change, but his eyes narrowed slightly.
"This is non-negotiable. Please vacate the table."
The tension was palpable as we hesitated
I held her hand and spoke up, my voice calm
"It's okay, we can move. There are plenty of other tables available."
She reluctantly gave in, sending him hard glares that didnt faze him one bit
We gathered our belongings and moved to a smaller table, casting occasional glances at Ahmad, who now sat at our former table, typing away on his laptop.
The rest of the evening was spent trying to shake off the awkward encounter, but I couldn't help sneaking glances at Ahmad, wondering what kind of rude person he was.
"By the way ahlan, i want to join your book club."
She almost jumped off her chair "dagaskeee?"
I nodded and she didnt waste time in typing away on her phone
"Why the change of heart all of a sudden?"
I turned to samira whose face held a worried look
"Nothing. I just want to do something new."
"Then come join me in polo, pretty please."
Ehn
"Are you okay?"
Me that makes sure to stay atleast 5 miles away from a horse
"It'll be so fun aisha, i promise you. Oh, and the next meeting is in three weeks time. Ill make sure to drop the book for you at home."
