“Thank you Sir, I’ll make my way now” I bowed in respect as I collected my high school timetable.
“Y/N dear, you can still call me Jae- Appa like you did before. You studying here won’t change our relationship. Namjoon, take her to her home room and her teacher will take it from there. My dear, you’ll only be attending one lesson today as school ends in just over an hour, you’ll start your actual lessons from tomorrow. If you have any problems don’t hesitate to come to me, okay my dear?” Jeon Jaehyung, the headmaster of my school, patted my head lovingly as Namjoon Oppa lightly rubbed my hand.
I lightly smile nodding, my throat closing from the overwhelming warmth from my two individuals by me. With a final nod, my brother Kim Namjoon led me out of the office as I released a sigh that I didn’t realise I was holding in.
Today was my first day back at school. Term has started around a month and a half ago but due to unavoidable circumstances I couldn’t start when I was due to. That past few months have been a nightmare, so much happened and dare I say it’s far too soon for me to just adapt right where I left off.
My life was pretty much perfect up until four months ago. I had the perfect family, my parents, my older brother Kim Namjoon and me. We all lived under the same roof and I was safe and happy in my little world that I had created. Being quite well off, we lived in an elite neighbourhood which only a few could afford. My father, Kim Taemin and my mother, Kim Yoona, had established a fashion brand which was known throughout Asia.
Yes, they’d go to business trips, be busy with work, but unlike typical business owners, my parents managed their time, they prioritised raising and having adequate time for their two children. Taking office work home was forbidden in their books, they strictly believed that each person and each work had its own place and that each thing deserves its own time. My parents had noticed that the majority of their clients and rivals had adapted work being their whole life, prioritising making money above all, regardless of how their children coped and felt. It was evident that instead of raising their kids, these people saw them as assets, which would carry on their businesses. They would shut people’s mouths with money when their child would act out, no matter how bad of an action it was, they’d pay off their actions with money in the name of “love” for their children.
My parents hated that mentality. They believed that in order to raise children, parents needed to give them time, discipline them when necessary, to teach that actions have consequences (good and bad). Keeping that in mind, they always kept true their beliefs and that’s why I think they were so successful both in their professional and personal lives.
Growing up, we lived adjacent to the Jeon Family. My father, was best friends with Mr Jeon Jaehyun and my mother was best friends with Mr Jeons wife, Jeon Ara. The four of them had grown up together, they witnessed many historical moments of one another’s lives. From graduating high school to college to their respective weddings. From weddings to setting up their businesses to witnessing the birth of their children. It was safe to say that the Kim Family and the Jeon Family was more than just friends, they were each others chosen family, they went through highs and lows together and there was always a sibling bond between Mr Jeon and my mother as this was also the same with my father and Mrs Jeon.
Namjoon and I had always called Mr and Mrs Jeon as Jae-Appa and Ara-Eomma respectively. The couple had a son, Jeon Jungkook, who was five years older than me. Growing up, he and I were extremely fond of each other, I remember him always protecting me from the stupidest things. I had developed a crush on him and only God knows when my stupid childhood crush turned into falling deeply in love with him. But it seemed like even God didn’t approve of my love for Jungkook or maybe he was sparing me the hurt of rejection from my Kookie, because five years ago, he left. Jeon Jungkook left without a trace, without saying goodbye, and to add salt on my wound, he completely ignored my text messages and calls.
That day was the first time I heard my heart crack. My first love, my best friend, my protector had just left. Leaving me was one thing but completely ghosting me was what affected me the most.
My mama, my dad, Ara-Eomma, Jae-Appa and even Namjoon Oppa tried to control the damage that Jungkook had caused, being ‘furious’ at the way he left. Apparently, before leaving he had met everyone, said his goodbyes and even promised to keep in touch, the only person who he didn’t meet was me.
It hurt. It hurt like a bitch. Till today I still believe I had done something wrong which caused my Kookie to leave without a trace. I thought that his departure which caused my heart to break would result in me hating him, but the irony is, it only lead me to fall even deeper in love with him, if that was all possible. I yearned him. I wanted to tell him how much he had hurt me, how I just wanted to hug him like we used to. I just wanted him near me again.
“Here we are pumpkin. This is your home room. Your teacher is aware of your situation so if anyone or anything bothers you, you can call me, your teacher or Jae-Appa directly. I’ve taken the day off today so I’ll be in Jae-Appa’s office and I’ll pick you up from here at the end of the day. Is that okay?” Namjoon Oppa’s broke my monologue and I realised that we had arrived to my assigned room.
I passed a faint smile to him, slightly nodding my head as I could hear my heartbeat get louder and louder. My throat dried up, my hands began to shake as I physically felt my anxiety erupt. I felt as if I was shrinking by the second.
Come on Y/N! This is no time to act like a twelve year old. You’re seventeen! You can do this. I internally chided myself, taking in a deep breath.
“You’ll be okay, pumpkin. You’re not alone” My brother consoled me, feeling my anxiety. He softly knocked the door of the classroom, squeezing my hand softly with his other hand. I heard a muffled “come in” come from inside, I held my breath,
It was now or never.
The door clicked open as I hid behind Namjoon Oppa instinctively as he took a step through the door.
“Hello! I have the pupil which was due to class today” Namjoon’s voice beamed and I could tell he was smiling, displaying his dimples. Namjoon took a step back slightly, exposing me to the teacher and class. I looked down, scrunching the bottom of my uniform skirt.
“Y/N…?” I immediately look up to my brother who was gesturing me to look around the class.
I looked up looking at my classmates, they all tended to pass light smiles towards me, even the ones that I had never spoken to. Their eyes however spoke a different language. All I could see in each eye was pity. Immense pity. And I hated it. I know deep down they all meant well but I hated the pity attention I could see. I reciprocated the smiles to them, and turned to look to the front of the room to see my teacher.
I froze.
