~ May you forever be the best of us.

We knew we'd be the ones to leave

Leave before the rest of them

Not because we were there before them

But because we joined after them

And you knew who they were

The miscellaneous group

The group that had no rhyme or reason to belong with each other the way they did

They didn't share commonality

Besides the fact that their souls were older than ours

They didn't belong in the same friend group

And yet their bonds were stronger than a child's desire for attention

They didn't ever seem to be important

Until you looked at their feeds years after you left

You look at their stories and posts thinking that

They never flaunted their wealth like the rest of us do

Or showcased the views of the cities below them

All you see is the sparkle in their eyes from the simple moments they live

The genuine imperfections of life written onto those photos

They didn't pose for the pictures

The setting is whatever was there

And you'd think they'd be the ones to have the most to display

Don't get me wrong, they definitely do

But unlike the rest of us

They were sincere

They lived in the moment

They wore real smiles like how we now wear our opinions

Sometimes proud

Others shameful

Repetitive

Passing

Their smiles were rare though

The genuine smiles I mean

The smiles that only came out when they were with each other

Not a friend group, but a family.

Then they'd return to their cliques

Turn their attention to something else

Making their smiles disappear

So did they hate us then?

No it wasn't hate

Hate is taught

No one taught us hate

They were exhausted by us

We tired their old souls

With the lies and games we played

Their patience wore thin with the drama and false narratives we'd create

And they couldn't keep up with all the experiences we'd relentlessly post

They got tired of listening to our fake rambling

The inauthenticity bled through our words and clothes and actions

Bleeding our wallets dry till we left

They must've been so relieved

They clearly were.

Are.

We kept them from each other

We divided the pure

And now that we're gone

I wonder what they say

They're living their lives

With smiles on their faces

As we have no more to flaunt

We don't know how to capture the simple joys

Little smiles

Authenticity

We have nothing going for us anymore

I wonder if they can see it

Because they were always the best of us
