Ananya was just about to enter the office premises on her two-wheeler when she spotted Avi's car approaching from the opposite direction. Gasping, she quickly glanced at her watch,

Aiyoyo, namba ivlo late'ah varomnu therinjirukume?

( Oh god, he's going to know that this is the timing that I come to work)

Usually, Avi arrived at the office much later than Ananya because he would typically stop by their factory before coming in. Therefore, she usually left late but still managed to arrive before him. However, today it seemed her boss had a change of plans.

Ananya glanced through the car window and caught Avi's narrowed eyes before he drove into the premises. She gulped nervously as she rode her bike, following closely behind him.

Ananya hastily parked her two-wheeler and rushed towards the lobby, hoping to beat Avi inside. To her dismay, she found him already walking in. Ananya couldn't help but stomp her feet in frustration, her pout evident as she watched him enter ahead of her.

Ippo mela pona kandipa thitta poran

( I'm definitely getting an earful from him when I go up)

Mentally preparing herself for whatever awaited her, Ananya sulkily ambled towards the elevator. However, she paused when she noticed that the doors were open. Curious to see if it was malfunctioning, she peeked inside and her eyes widened in shock.

She found Avi inside, his forefinger holding the button to keep the elevator door ajar as he patiently waited for her, his gaze fixed on nothing in particular. Ananya clutched her handbag tightly, wondering if she had stumbled upon her boss or his ghost in the elevator.

Ulla varingala illa 30 madhi padhi yeri varingala?

( Do you want to come in or do you want to take the stairs for 30 floors?)

Ananya gasped before she quickly ran inside and stood at the other corner of the lift, Avi released the button, and the elevator ascended.

If anyone asked Ananya about the most awkward moment of her life, she would undoubtedly recount this elevator encounter. Avi stood there with his hands clasped, staring straight ahead. Meanwhile, Ananya was like a curious squirrel, darting glances at him, trying to decipher his mood. But Avi's expression remained as inscrutable as a stone statue, leaving her wondering if he was simmering with anger or didn't even care.

Avi couldn't help but stifle a chuckle as he observed Ananya's antics through the reflection in the elevator door. Her panicked movements resembled a duck caught in a hunter's hands, flustering about in a display of nervous energy. Though he maintained his stoic facade, Avi found himself amused by her reaction, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips as he continued to watch her without letting on that he was aware of her antics.

Ananya cleared her throat and nervously asked,

Sir?

Avi simply hummed

Inniki neenga factory'ku pogalaya?

( Didn't you go to the factory today?)

Yen therinja innum konjam late'ah vandhurupingala?

( Why would you have came more later if you'd known?)

Ananya rolled her tongue in the inside of her mouth, she deserved this, she thought to herself. As the elevator dinged its arrival on their floor, Ananya was torn between relief and a lingering sense of unease. Avi held the door for her as she exited.
