"Look, Tree! There's a squirrel!"

You pointed at the small critter relaxing a few feet away from the bench the two of you were seated, rapidly tugging on Tree's arm to catch his attention. Your companion hummed, shifting his gaze to where you were eagerly directing at. He blinked at the sight of the squirrel just going about its day.

"Yes, yes, (Name). I can see just fine, no need to shake me that hard." While Tree sounded unamused, the smile tugging at his lips spoke a different story.

You gave him a playful shove in retaliation — he awarded you with an offended "hey!" — and rolled your eyes. "Right, my bad or whatever. Do you think there's any way to lure the squirrel here?" You asked, keeping your eyes trained on the critter. "I really want to get a closer at it..."

"Well," Tree started, "Squirrels like acorns, don't they? Maybe we can find some and offer them to it."

"Oh, you're right!" You peered at him, perking up before immediately deflating. "But where would we find those? It's not like they'll just randomly spawn in."

Tree pulled out a thick, navy book complete with a lightbulb logo in response to your ramblings.

...

What.

You blinked once. Then twice. How and where did he even— you know what, you won't question its existence. You had other things to focus on. Like how you were going to befriend a squirrel, or at least attempt to.

Oblivious to your internal dilemma, Tree swiftly flipped through the pages of the book, eventually coming to a stop. You leaned on his side to get a better look at the text. Tree jolted upon feeling you press against him, but made no moves to bring it up or back away.

"I-It says here that if you have a problem, then you should ask Black Hole," Tree read, trying and failing to keep his voice steady. He snuck a glance at you — only to see you engrossed in the book's contents. How cute, he thought, a fond smile making its way onto his face. He wondered how you would react if he were to press a kiss against your forehead at this moment.

Would you be flustered? Or would you— wait. Tree paused. Why was he thinking about such things? There was no way you would react that positively; the two of you weren't even dating! Although... Tree stared at you, absentmindedly noting from how the sunlight lit up your features, to the way your brows furrowed ever so slightly at whatever you were reading. Your warmth against his side felt more prominent than ever.

...He now wondered if there was a chance you shared the same feelings as he did.

Tree was snapped out of his thoughts when you abruptly spoke up. "This book makes absolutely no sense! There's no way we can find Black Hole; he's all the way up in space! And if we did reach him, I doubt he'll be able to hear us without sucking us up." You slammed the book shut in frustration.

You sighed, leaning into the bench, "Who knew it would be this troublesome to get a few pieces of acorns? I guess it'll be better to just not bother with it anymore." You glanced back at where the squirrel was. It's long gone, probably having better things to do unlike you. A hand settled on your shoulder. You blinked, diverting your focus to looking at its owner.

"Hey, don't look so down. I'll find some for you, alright?" Tree patted your shoulder in an attempt to console you.

"What, no! It's okay!" You frantically waved your hands back and forth in a "no" motion. "You don't have to—"

"Shhh, don't worry about it; I have my ways." One of Tree's fingers hovered over your lips to silence you, "Now come on, let's get back home. It's getting late." He stood up from his spot and turned to look at you.

You remained motionless on the bench, mouth agape and heart pounding. What in the world was that about?! If it was to get your mind off the lost opportunity to observe a squirrel, then it surely worked. It was only when Tree stifled a chuckle that you reacted — scrambling onto your feet as if you were being timed. The two of you slowly made your way home, conversing on random topics.

Tree peered at you as you chatted away. Occasionally, he would catch you staring at him — to which you would promptly avert your gaze elsewhere with flushed cheeks. The sight never fails to lighten his mood. One day, when he's ready, he'll tell you how he feels. He hopes that when that day does arrive, he can proudly call the both of you a couple.

But for now, he's content with just watching you smile under the moonlight.

812 words, excluding the author's notes, on Google docs. Is there any wattpad expert that can tell me why wattpad shows it as more when images are added ☹️

Something to get the book started with before it dies for 2 months. Thank you for reading my silly hyperfixation :)
