Butterflies are beautiful, winged insects belonging to the Lepidopteran suborder Rhopalocera

A butterfly's body is divided into three parts - head, thorax, and abdomen. It has a pair of compound eyes, a pair of antennae, and a proboscis which helps in the collection of pollen from flowers. Yes, like bees, butterflies also collect and consume nectar and help in pollination. It has two pairs of large wings which come in various colours and patterns. Butterflies are completely harmless and are a useful and important part of the ecosystem.

A butterfly's lifecycle includes four stages - egg stage, larva stage, pupa stage, and adult stage. An adult female butterfly lays its eggs on leaves. They usually lay 200-500 eggs, which vary in shape and size depending on the species. These eggs hatch in four to five days and larvae come into the world. These are called caterpillars. They feast voraciously on the leaves of the host tree in order to grow rapidly. As they eat and their bodies expand, their skin becomes tight and eventually splits and sheds, revealing new skin beneath. This is called molting and occurs several times as the larva grows.

When the caterpillars have eaten enough and grown to a certain size, they attach themselves to a branch, and molt for the last time creating a thick encasement around their body. This shell known as a chrysalis, protects the pupa from external forces. Breathing holes in the outer shell help them obtain air. Inside the chrysalis, the pupa undergoes a tremendous change. It grows and develops a new set of legs, wings, eyes, mouthparts, and genitalia.

After its metamorphosis, the adult butterfly splits open its chrysalis and emerges in its new form. Its still-soft body dries in the open air and becomes complete. The butterfly flutters its wings and flies away. Sometimes it lands on flowers or other surfaces, folding its wings perpendicular to the surface.

Butterflies are truly magnificent creatures. It is sad that their numbers are declining due to an imbalance in nature caused by deforestation, pollution, and global warming. Humanity should strive to protect the environment and the various small and large lifeforms on Earth.
