"SAMMY?"

Sam's eyes fluttered open at the soft voice that pierced the silence, turning his head in confusion. Birdie was laid on her side and facing Sam in their shared bed, a solemn look on her face like she was in deep thought. Sam's expression softened and he rolled over, sitting up on his elbow as he peered down at Birdie with concern. "Bird?" Sam quietly asked, his voice a little gruff after just waking up.

Birdie frowned, twisting her lips as she hesitated to answer for a few moments. "Is this really our life now, Sam?" Sam let out a sigh, glancing down. Birdie scooted closer, lifting her hand to Sam's chin to make him look at her. "Just living with our heads buried in the sand for the rest of our lives? Running away from who we are? Who we're both meant to be?"

Sam's eyes stared into Birdie's for a few seconds, a small frown on his lips. Then he turned, sitting up in bed. He swung his legs over the edge with his back turned to Birdie, brows knitted together as he thought to himself. Birdie sat up as well, scooting closer to Sam.

"People can change," Sam said after a few moments. "There is reason for hope."

"No, Sam. There isn't."

Birdie reached up, gently moving some hair behind Sam's ear with a sad smile. Sam closed his eyes, a comforting warmth spreading through him at Birdie's gentle touch. Then she put her hand on Sam's shoulder, her thumb softly stroking back and forth. Suddenly her appearance began to change, morphing into someone else.

A blond man who looked to be about in his mid 40's took her place, an eerie smile on his face as his hand remained on Sam's shoulder.

"How can you be so sure?" Sam softly asked.

He didn't realize it was no longer Birdie who he was talking to.

"Because you freed me."

Sam abruptly turned his head, spotting the man instead of Birdie sitting behind him. His eyes widened in horror and he shot up from the mattress, unable to look away as he distanced himself from the bed.
