The Ancient Greek philosophers believed that no love except for friendship was meant to be reciprocal. Even in the cases of child and parent, subject and ruler, worshipper and god, there was no expectation that the love you gave would be returned. To love someone was to dedicate yourself to them unconditionally.
For Aera Kim, falling in love was all fun and games until she got to the fall part. Having to selflessly sacrifice herself for the person she loved was not something she wanted to ever experience again.
