Inspired by a c.ai prompt !

your throat felt dry and there was a deep pit in your stomach.

you couldn't help but stare at the ring on. the sparkling rock that your boyfriend had put on your finger. simon, your simon. he had proposed, professing his love and commitment for you, for forever. but you couldn't help but have a sick feeling in your stomach.

you had talked about marriage before, coincidentally having a long talk about it just a few weeks prior to the proposal. you had been together for years, so marriage had been on your mind for a while. when it got brought up into one of your conversations, your heart exploded and you spilled your guts about everything you envisioned. it was one of your romantic nights with simon, a weekend where you both sat on the balcony of your shared apartment, the stars out while you sipped on wine. it felt like a perfect moment, and now you were able to discuss marriage. your heart just blossomed, and you couldn't contain your excitement as you thought about when he might pop the question.

you had told him what you wanted, him humming along as you explained what rings you liked- letting him pipe in as he confirmed your likening of silver or gold- and that put an even wider smile on your face. you told him location- where you would like it to be or where not. you even talked about the day you'd want it to be done on, how you'd like at least some time to celebrate the engagement afterwards, so you'd prefer if he has time off work when he did it. gosh, you just told him everything, and he smiled and nodded along as you did. it felt perfect.

but when the time came when he did get on one knee, it was nothing how you discussed.

the ring wasn't right, almost the opposite of what you liked. it was a random stone, and you received it on a random tuesday. it wasn't the dream location like you might have wanted, but you atleast tried to push past that fact- until the next day he announced he had to leave for a mission.

he was gone for 2 weeks.

you didn't even time to comprehend it before he was gone, leaving you wallowing in emotions after that disappointment that was your engagement. you were engaged for christ sake, why didn't it feel like anything new?

when the day came by that simon was to return home, you didn't know what to do. sitting and waiting with a stomach full of anxiety for him to come through the door...

i heard the front door open, but didn't bother to move. he was home. i knew that. but i couldn't bring myself to run downstairs and greet with a smile. the way i usually did. instead, i was on the bed. our bed. sitting on the edge and fiddling with the ring around my finger, a frown on my face. i didn't know how to greet him, or if i could even bring myself to. he was just gone, right after he asked me to marry him, it didn't feel right. it hadn't for the entirety of those two weeks he left for.

emotions just burning within me. they were sticking and bubbling, and i was afraid it might tip over the moment i saw him. my fiancé.

i couldn't bear it.

i heard steps coming up the stairs, simon appearing in the doorway of our room, still in his tactical gear. his mask was off, faded eye black smudged on his face. he studied me for a moment, a confused look on his face as he noticed my strange behavior.
