Acanthite is a common silver mineral, the most important silver ore. It is silver to shiny black in color.
Even though the mineral may look like steel, it isn't nearly as strong, its Mohs scale hardness being only 2. It is structurally the same mineral as Argentite and is only different by the crystal system. Some specimens of "Argentite" are sold by mineral dealers, however these are indeed Acanthite, which simply replaces the Argentite in the same shape (a pseudomorph).
