"Go sit down please."

"You seriously didn't have to do anything."

I came over and as he sat down, I placed the plate in front of him, using the lighter on the counter to light up the candles.

Three pancakes sat on the plate, whip cream between each layer and a shit ton of rainbow sprinkles.

He chuckled, looking down at the plate and then up at me. "You spoil me."

I bumped my hip into his arm, trying to hide my smile. "Happy 25th birthday Norway," I said, a sudden lump forming in my throat. Never did I think I'd get to spend another birthday with him. It was crazy how quickly things had changed. "I hope this new year of life gives you everything you've ever truly wanted."

His expression grew thoughtful as he listened to me, his eyes never leaving mine.

"Make a wish."

He closed his eyes, his blond eyelashes fluttered for a moment. Then leaning forward, he expelled a breath, the fire from the candles going out.

"Yay!" I clapped, sitting down in the chair next to him. "Okay, now for your gift."

"Seriously Minnow, you didn't have to do all of this. I told you I didn't---"

"Shhhhh!" I hushed, grabbing the small gift box. "I know, I know. You don't like making your birthday a big deal. But that's too bad. I love birthdays."

His green eyes rolled as he sat back in his chair and listened.

"Okay, so I didn't know what to get you 'cause you pretty much have everything and you're a weirdo that has every book he wants." His brows lowered comically, a grin on his lips. "I don't know if you remember but we used to get each gag gifts on our birthdays. Like the weirdest shit we could find."

That year he got me a duck whistle and I got him a teddy bear that released fart noises every time you squeezed it.

"I remember," he replied a soft look in his eyes.

"Okay, so I thought I'd get you something really corny and stupid." I smiled to myself. "And I hope it makes you laugh. So here."

I handed him the gift box and it seemed even smaller in his big hands. Turning it over he smiled as he unwrapped it. Beneath the paper, a velvet box was revealed. "You got me jewelry. Minnow you didn't have to spend mon--"

"Trust me, it's not what you think," I mused, enjoying the confusion on his face. "When I thought of it, I was laughing."

He opened the small box. I gauged his reaction and watched as his smile slowly morphed into a blank look.

"You don't get it?"

He didn't say anything.

"It's cheesy and ironic all in one," I explained. He turned the jewelry box and revealed a gold necklace, the letter M in cursive hanging off the chain.
