It was a choice they had discussed privately. Calculester had been heavily damaged, and as it stood, there was no one around who could fix him, not even Oz. So, after a long talk, it was decided that Calculester would power down and enter this sort of sleep mode, until there was someone who could properly repair him.
(A long time ago, Oz had been interested in what's now considered ancient runes, as well as technology. But they had refrained from learning anything aside from distant observation, scared of the discrimination or hate they could face.)
