I found an old handout from my school and decided to share the key information on it with you all.
"A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other person. and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself."
Identifying Bullying
1) Verbal Bullying including derogatory comments and bad names
2) Bullying through social exclusion or isolation
3) Physical bullying such as hitting, kicking shoving and spitting
4) Bullying through lies and false rumors
5)Having money or other things taken or damaged by students who bully
6) Being threatened or being forced to do things by students who bully
7) Racial Bullying
8) Sexual bullying
9) Cyber-bullying (via cell phone or internet)
Why students Bully
1) Students who bully have strong needs for power and (negative) dominance.
2) Students who bully feel good about causing injury and suffering to other students.
3) Students who bully are often rewarded in some way for their behavior.
Impact of Bullying
Students who are bullied:
1) Deserve to feel safe at school
2) But when they are bullied they experience long lasting effects of :-
Depression
Low self esteem
Health Problems
Poor Grades
Suicidal Thoughts
Students who bully:
1) Should be held accountable for their actions
2) More likely than other students :-
Get into frequent fights
Steal and vandalize property
Drink alcohol and smoke
Report poor grades
Perceive a negative climate at school
Carry a weapon
Students who observe bullying
1) May feel that they are in an unsafe environment
[Adding this in myself] 2) Should immediately report any and all bullying sightings
3) May also feel :-
Fearful
Powerless to act
Guilty for not acting
Tempted to participate
What should you do if you are being bullied at school?
Students should report incidents of bullying without hesitating.
Reporting can help further incidents of bullying, protect other students and reduce other forms of violence at school.
Bullying is not acceptable behavior (anywhere). You can report it to the following members of staff :-
1) Class teacher
2) Dean of discipline
3) Safety Officer
4) Principal
5) Vice principal
6) Guidance Officer
