Flames still licked at parts of the castle's high walls, the short lived battle had been over for less than an hour. Your small kingdom had been at war with a neighboring race of dragons for a little over six months, your own father had been killed a little over a month ago. Your mother had taken the news particularly hard and had gone effectively mute. Why you didn't understand, your father was an ill tempered and often violent man but with him gone and your eldest brother still at war and your younger brother still a child the responsibility of your house fell to you, small and weak as it may be.
Your house was a small one, mostly your family owned land and grew food for the crown, though your father wanted your brothers to be knights and had wanted to marry you off for a better alliance, which your house desperately needed. The last few years of crops had been bad and your family was quickly running out of funds and already had gone through many cutbacks, your marriage and your brothers training were all that your family had to save itself from collapsing in on itself. Your older brother, Fallon, had taken to it well, he was strong and swift with a sword. Your father had moved the five of you to court in the hopes of him being knighted and for you to be married off. You'd been promised to another small lord's son and were supposed to be married a few weeks ago but the event had been pushed back due to constant fighting. While the man you were to marry was no great fighter he had still been dragged away to help in the fighting, you wondered if he'd come back at all and what your family would do if he didn't. While he was no great prize his family did have money and were willing to help get your house back on its feet in exchange for your hand and a small cut of profits once your family began to make them again.
You were currently on the way to the throne room with your younger brother Brooks, a boy of six, and your mother. The fighting had made its way to your castle walls and your people had not done well, how could they against monsters who rain down fire as they please. It had taken less than an hour for the opposing force to make their way inside the castle walls. You had been gathered with the other family heads, discussing what to be as the vanguard fell when a large group of men made their way into the meeting room you'd been held up in. They had spared most of you, a few of your own men had tried to fight them when they'd entered only to be cut down quickly. One of the opposing men with reptilian eyes had ordered everyone to retrieve the remaining members of their families and to gather in the throne room. Locked hand in hand with Brooks' you made your way to the throne room, the closer you made it to the throne room the more evidence of fighting you saw. Blade marks on the wall, blood splattered on the floor, the decorative banners of the king's house had all been torn down leaving the stone walls cold and bare.
You made the final turn to the throne room and slowed your pace a bit as you pulled your younger brother closer to you as if you could somehow protect him from the sight. Bodies of fallen soldiers and knights were pushed to the side and covered in thin cloth to make room for people to walk through but the sight was still grim, burnt flesh and the smell of blood stained the air and you could still see the blood pooling through the thin material placed over the dead. Brooks' hold on your hand tightens, drawing your attention to the child, "Don't look." You told him as you picked your pace back up, you didn't bother looking towards your mother, she hadn't said anything in weeks and you doubted she would now. You wondered if Fallon was still alive or if any of you would live long enough to see each other again. You wondered if you were leading your brother to his death, but what more could you do? Running wasn't an option, you'd be caught and more than likely killed for the attempt.
The front of the throne room was guarded by two more men with reptilian eyes, they sneered at you and your family as they opened the heavy wooden doors for you. The throne room was deathly silent, a large number of families had already gathered but no one said anything. In fact the only sound in the room was the hand of the king, Lord Domino speaking quietly with the most intimidating man you'd ever seen. The man was not faced to you but he stood well above everyone else in the room and had long silver hair that fell to his lower back, he wore a black leather coat with metal armor attached to his shoulders. You quickly decided that you wanted your family nowhere near that man and led them to a spot along the wall opposite the large floor to ceiling windows. You couldn't see much of the room, too many people had gathered and you again found yourself wondering if you'd all been brought here to die.
