What happened in Quiapo was just mentioned in the story, Mara went to Madam Josa for a classic reading. Her friend referred Madam Josa if she wanted to do some reading. She doesn't usually believe in it, but she was always spontaneous with the idea of it as she thought she wouldn't lose anything just by doing it.
So, her reading was going abroad and meeting a man there—which she did, and eventually, they got to talk again where Madam Josa mentioned she needed to look after this man but forgot about it.

Now, she arrived in Cape Town where she believed Madam Josa was right all along. Her readings to her came true, but was still on the line because there was still one reading she was waiting for if it would come true. She got a job. She got to meet new friends. Go around the city and experience what life was like in Cape Town. Her relationship with Ryan was the one she was expecting she would have. He would hate her and he did. They didn't get along much, but Ryan was keeping an eye on her.
When she was put in an uncomfortable situation, he was alarmed by it, though as he found out that Jorge was dating her, he backed off, and let him look after her while still being vigilant from afar. There were multiple occasions when her harasser got closer to her and he was very worried about it. Jorge was there for her throughout the event. And believed at that point, Jorge was the one Madam Josa was telling. He could be the man for her.
In time when they went to Willem's birthday weekend, it was a rollercoaster of events because a lot of things had happened, especially, Mara finding out that Jorge wasn't very loyal to her. That reason led her to go back to the Philippines. Ryan thought it would be his time to grow her relationship with Mara, but it was too late for him.

Leaving Cape Town was hard for her, but now that she was able to be herself again and do all the things she wanted to. She looked for a job, but especially, she went back to Quiapo where she met Madam Josa again.

In the new year, celebrating her birthday, Mara was surprised by Jeriko and Ryan who visited her in the Philippines. Even though they were in the country for only a few days, it was already big enough for Mara, especially when Ryan came along with him. At that moment, things change for both of them, as she just realizes that Ryan was his haven in Cape Town all along.
