THE END OF THE WORLD began on a Thursday. Sydney was only 12-years-old—not even legally old enough to sit in the passenger's seat of her dad's truck, which they left behind when they fled their small town and headed for the city. Ellen promised it was to visit their grandparents, but the truth was revealed all too quickly—the dead were alive, and the living were being hunted. Sitting in their grandparents' house with a year's worth of supplies, hearing her siblings cry to their parents about if they're going to die, Sydney makes a promise. No more rebelling. Whatever her parents need from her, she'll provide, if only to keep her family safe.
SYDNEY FORD DOESN'T BREAK PROMISES. Tyler Gilbert, her best and only friend, once told Sydney that that's why he likes Sydney so much; when Sydney makes a promise, she keeps it. So she keeps quiet about her fear of the dead and handles her siblings when asked. She doesn't comment on their lack of supplies and the way she can feel her own ribs in favor of scooping more food onto Rebecca's and A.J.'s plates during dinner. She doesn't ask her mom questions about dying and holds Ellen as she sobs in the middle of the night, while Abraham is in the outside world trying to find their meal for the next week.
SYDNEY FORD DOESN'T LOSE HOPE. Time passes by; people die, sometimes in her arms. She gets used to the sight of blood and flesh and the blown-out brains of both the living and dead. She clings to her father like a lifeline and turns a blind eye to the violence he inflicts on the living, rationalizing that it is necessary for their family to survive. Ellen disagrees and the twins shake when Abraham looks at them, but the stars in Sydney's eyes don't fade when she looks at her dad. So when Ellen tells the kids to follow her and leave Abraham behind, Sydney, for the first time in her life, breaks a promise—she rebels.
SYDNEY FORD KEEPS A LIST. Tyler Gilbert. Jacob Athlon. Miss Isa. Ellen Ford. Rebecca Ford. Abraham Ford Junior. Stephanie, Warren, Pam. With every death, she adds a name. She makes another promise, one that she can't break—remember those who joined the dead. Never forget their names, never let them truly die. Make them proud by surviving, and leave a flower on every roadside to remember the list. Rex, Josiah. Keep her father close and everyone else at a distance. Dirk, Josephine. Don't cry, don't fear, and try not to hope for a happy ending. In this new world, the only ending is death—and Sydney doesn't know if she's afraid to die anymore.
