When he walks away, Donovan snorts. "Humanly," he repeats under his breath, so quiet I can barely make this words out. "Ironic. Poor girl."

Hmm. Donovan doesn't like vampires at all. I would've thought he'd keep that secret seeing as he's in a town rife with vampires.

Arching an eyebrow in a good-natured fashion, Elijah inquires, "And what were you laughing about?"

"It was strange to hear something as ordinary as a food item coming out of the mouth of a vampire," I remark, grinning.

Amused, Elijah leans back in his seat. "Is that so?"

"Yes. And I also have many, many questions," I claim, "Such as why my mother was on the run from your brother? How have you lived for one thousand years? Why did the alpha pack bring me to you? Why, and how, ha—"

"I'm going to be here for a very long time, evidently," Elijah cuts in with a small smile. "And you're sure you want to do this? Stick around, I mean? It's not too late to back out of this, if that's what you truly want."

"Of course," I answer eagerly, "I'd love to be part of my real family."

"Well, you've been born into a very complicated, messy one," Elijah explains with a slight air of disdain, "We've only very recently set our differences aside. And even then, quarrelling, threatening, and blackmailing is frequent."

This only interests me more. "I'm very experienced when it comes to messy families," I claim. Elijah, yet again, cocks an intrigued eyebrow. "I'd love to hear it all, regardless."

"Alright. As eager as I am to hear about your life, Nylah, I'm sure you'd prefer to learn about your biological family right now."

"Yes." I nod vigorously.

Elijah takes a sip of his bourbon. "You're an Original, Nylah. Do you know what that means?"

I shake my head.

And so, as we eat our lunch, Elijah explains how the Originals came to be.

His mother, Esther (a.k.a. my grandmother), and their father, Mikael (a.k.a. my grandfather) were originally unable to conceive children.

Esther, who was a witch, made a deal with the local group of witches: in return for her being able to conceive children, she had to give up her first born (who ended up being Freya).

Following this deal, Esther and Mikael had Freya, Finn, Elijah, Niklaus, Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik.

At a later stage, Esther converted her children into vampires to protect them from a neighbouring group of werewolves, who had killed Henrik.

Elijah informs me that they all started spinning out of control because they didn't know how to control their cravings.

He tells me that though they had compulsion abilities and enhanced speed, hearing, and strength, they soon found out that the sun burned them, that vervain flowers harmed them, and that they weren't allowed to step into anyone's house without being invited in.

Elijah explains that when Klaus first killed someone, he triggered his werewolf gene — and that was how everyone discovered that Klaus was not Mikael's son. Mikael, in a fit of rage, killed the entire werewolf clan... including Klaus's father. This feud between werewolves and vampires still exists to this day.

He tells me that his father killed Esther due to her affair.

Over the years, Niklaus daggered his siblings with a White Oak stake whenever they inconvenienced him: Finn was dormant for 900 years, and Rebekah and Kol were daggered multiple times. Elijah was the only one to escape this.
