Stage One: Physical Healing

The country road was long, dark, and closely lined with trees. Animals sat by the edge of the road and nearby lake. They had no reason to worry since it was hardly driven on. The edges of the asphalt were worn down, and nature was starting to take back what was its to begin with. Small green sprouts could be seen peeking through all the cracks that had started to form along the sides and worn-out edges.

Suddenly, a bright light came over one of the hills and scared a family of deer, causing them to run back into the safety of the forest.

As the almost bald tires of the bike tore away at the road, Derick looked at the gas tank, then at his watch. He half swore under his breath and half prayed. He wasn't sure if he was going to make it on time. He was trying to beat the sunrise and was failing miserably. As the rays from the sun started to shoot up into the sky, they cast shadows around the trees. Derick wrenched the throttle and pushed the old bike to its limit.

There was a crack of thunder in the distance as the bike started to shake and let out a loud popping sound of its own in reply, but he couldn't stop. He still had at least another hour to go on the road before he got into civilization and to the car rental that was waiting for him... and he didn't want to be on an open bike if it started raining.

"Please, please, please! You piece of shit." he yelled as it started to make more noises. The lights started to flicker and gave out.

Without lights, he couldn't see the sizeable pothole that years of nature taking back the area had made in the road ahead of him and hit it at full speed, causing his cellphone to shoot out of his pocket and into a nearby ditch.

     "SHIT!"

He took his eyes off the road and looked back down at the gas again... running his bike into something gigantic and solid. Both Derick and the bike flew into the air. The bike landed with a splash on the edge of the lake and started to smoke. Derick wasn't as lucky. He had been thrown into one of the large trees along the side of the road and heard a crack.

Derick prayed that it was the tree that had cracked, but the pain coursing through his body told him he was dead wrong. Blood ran through his scruffy dark hair and down his face like rain down a sidewalk. His head was spinning, and he couldn't move his legs.

'I'm about to die,' he thought to himself. 'There's no way I'm going to live through this.' Derick looked towards the rays of sunlight one last time and closed his eyes. He was ready for death to take him; in fact, he wanted it to.

The next moments of life were either a blur of events or a series of bad dreams.

Lights.

Voices.

Pain.

Screaming... was it his?
