"Question 1a), sin 60°...Come on class, I know it's the last day before Christmas break." Our math teacher Ms.Closney asked.
"√3 over 2" Olivia blurted. She's such a show off but I love her.
"Finally! Ok class. Finish up as much of the trig package as possible. We're starting it as soon as we come back. Happy holidays class, stay safe." Our teacher finishes class
I pack up my things and wait outside for Olivia. She is asking Ms.Closney about college advisor recommendations. I feel a buzz in my pocket and pull out my phone to see who's calling. It's David. Amazing. I knew he came back to Colorado early since his classes were done, but why was he calling? I pick up my phone and accept the call.
"Hey Ange, your mom can't come pick you up since she's stuck in a meeting. She asked if I can come. I'll see you in 10 minutes at the parking lot, ok?" David said.
"Yeah, that sounds good. I have to go, but I'll see you in the parking lot". I hang up. Fuck me. I usually drive to school but Mama had to use my car for a last minute meeting at work.
The last time I saw him was at Thanksgiving. Ever since then, I'm thoroughly impressed with myself that I didn't think about him much. But we will see how this goes.
"Thanks for waiting. I'm just going to drop something off at my locker. You need a ride?" said Olivia as we leave Ms. Closney's room. We're walking to her locker down the hall. Shoot! I could've asked her.
"No, David is picking me up since my mom can't come" I said.
Olivia freezes and stares at me. She knows the whole backstory between David and I. I can't tell if there's a smirk on her face or not as she takes her stuff from her locker.
"Okay, let's go to the parking lot. If you're free, let's go to Crema's sometime!" Crema Coffee House is a local cafe Olivia and I always go to. They have the best chai, but also great waffles and quiches. We went there a lot this semester to focus on all our college applications. Thankfully, both of us were mostly finished with our college application drafts and just needed to submit them soon. Olivia had applied early decision for NYU, while I was just preparing for regular decisions.
"Yeah, I'll text you". We head downstairs from the second floor before leaving the parking lot doors. It was snowing, the 'light snowflake, hot chocolate, listening to a Michael Bublé holiday album' type of snow.
I hug Olivia as she heads off to her car. I've known Olive since elementary school. She's been my best friend forever.
"Ange!" I hear a distant call to my right. David is leaning on the passenger door. A dark green 1/4 zip, some tan cargo pants and air force 1s. Bits of white snowflakes are settling into his hair. When did he learn to dress like that? I quickly walk towards him.
"Hey David, thanks-" I said. David engulfs me with a warm embrace. I can't help but freeze and it's not because of the weather. On one hand, it feels so natural but on the other, I kick myself for all the progress I've made since Thanksgiving. It's all gone.
"My pleasure Angie, get in!" David lets go before grabbing my backpack and opening the passenger door for me. He runs back to his side and our drive back to my house begins.
