"I don't get it, no. My music has always just been me and my notebook. Look, I get that he helped you get into music but you're telling me that Nathan wouldn't understand being passionate about something and working hard at it?"

"Don't- don't put it like that-"

"Okay, Haley, if Chris were in town... would you be into him? Because, you know, you kissed him."

"I know I kissed him and it was a mistake."

"So this whole connection is purely about the music?"

"That's all it is. I love Nathan," Haley promised.

back up, baby back up

did you forget everything?
back up, baby back up
did you forget everything?

"Maddie," Lucas looped a finger into her belt loop, pulling her into his side. The music played loudly through TRIC as people flooded the floor.

She crashed into his chest laughing. "Hi," she cheered, wrapping her arms around his neck and they swayed side to side. "How's Brooke's speech?"

"Good," he nodded, "Good. I think she'll do great," he smiled.

"I'm glad," she smiled up at him.

He leaned down a pressed a kiss to her lips.

"What was that for," she asked with a soft smile.

"I'm glad you're back, Angel," he responded.

"I'm glad I'm back too," she rested her head against his chest.

'cause it rains in his bedroom,
everything is wrong
it rains when she's here and it rains when she's gone

'cause he was there when she said forever and always
you didn't mean it, baby

Madelyn looked up from her notebook when her front door unlocked.

"Hey, honey," she greeted with a smile.

He dropped his bags by the door, "I'm supposed to be at Dan's. But I can't go, not yet."

"Okay," she smiled, tapping the spot next to her. He quickly complied.

"What are you writing?" he asked, trying to lean over and read it.

"Nothing," she giggled, pulling the notebook away from him.

you didn't mean it, baby

A ringing phone startled Madelyn awake.

"Hello?" she mumbled, glancing over to see that Lucas stayed asleep.

"Mads, you awake?" Nathan asked.

"I am now," she muttered, "What's up?"

"Haley left," he stated sadly.

"Where are you?" she asked.

"I don't know. Walking."

"Walk to my apartment. Now."

"Mads-"

"Now, Nathan. I'll unlock the door for you," she said softer.

She made her way to make a cup of tea in the kitchen, waiting until the front door unlatched.

Nathan was stood unmoving and heartbroken at her door.

"C'mon," she whispered, sitting on the couch, waiting for him to sit next to him before passing him a mug.

They sipped in silence for a few moments.

"She left," Nathan whispered, "... with Chris."

"She left for the music, not Chris," she reminded, gently stroking her fingers through his hair.

"I told her I wouldn't wait for her if she left. Then I couldn't get back in time to stop her."

"You can't blame yourself, Nate. This had nothing to do with you."

i changed the lyrics in this one. i was thinking madelyn wrote it from what nathan was feeling but also from an outside/storytelling perspective.
