Feeling the morning light shine in through her eyelids, Melody slowly forced them open. Yawning, she sat up and stretched, smiling from ear to ear.
"Just to think, a whole day with just me and my parents!" she squealed, shoving her head through her favorite panda shirt. She threw on some white knee-length shorts and made her way over to the bathroom to brush her teeth and wash her face. Since it was the first time she had seen them in months, they were going to do a ton of fun stuff. Go to the amusement park, watch a movie, try out that new Casian restaurant that just opened up a few blocks away, mercilessly judge that new Casian restaurant that just opened up a few blocks away; it would be awesome! Finished, she left to go jog downstairs to go meet her parents that should've been already awake, but abruptly stopped when she reached the guest room. It was extremely quiety, and although her brain told her he was probably just sleeping, she couldn't shake the uneasy felling that resided in the pit of her stomach. Deciding to go for it, she lightly tapped on the door.
"Kiku?" she asked. It felt like the room just seeped uneasiness. An agitated growl on the other side of the door was heard until he finally spoke.
"What. Is. It?" he asked, his voice covered in agitation. She had to admit, it was a bit unsettling.
"Um... it's just that I was checking to see if you were already awake. I uh... didn't mean to wake you up," she explained. Incomprehensible words were uttered along with a tired groan before he spoke again.
"Who, me? I'm fine, just tired. Don't worry, I was already awake," he responded normally.
"I'll be down in a second."
"Oh, ok," she answered, and went downstairs to avoid causing anymore irritation on her part. While downstairs, she poured herself a bowl of cereal and waited for her parents to come. She grew a big grin when she heard footsteps coming down the stairs. And come they did! In nice business suits. With some briefcases. Her smile quickly dropped.
"Why are you guys dressed like that? Pretty fancy to wear to the movies, don't cha think?" she joked. Although she had a feeling she already new the answer. Her mother gave her a small, sad smile.
"Look, Melody, I know you were looking forward to spending the day with us-"
"We were looking forward to it to!" her dad interjected.
"-but we can't hang out today. We just got off the phone with our bosses, and both your father and I have been offered great positions. We don't know too much about it, but it is very urgent, and we'll probably be there all day. Sorry, honey," she explained, ending with her typical empty apology.
"But... what about our day out together? What about the movies, and the Cajun resturant, a-and the-"
"Yes, yes, we know. And we really wanted to mercilessly critique that new Cajun restaurant, but this is for the good of our family. I mean, if we end up getting these positions, can live in Beverly Hills!" her mother said, looking off into the distance, probably at their imaginary mansion.
"Well, what am I supposed do all day?" Melody asked.
"That Kiki kid is still here, right? Go do all that stuff with him," her dad suggested.
"We'll even fund it for you," her mother added, opening her briefcase and rummaging through it.
"Really sweetie, this is for the best. And besides, we can always spend tomorrow together!" her dad assured her. Her mother finally stopped burrowing through her suitcase in order to hand Melody a crumpled up hundred dollar bill.
"You did all of that rummaging just to grab one bill?" Melody joked, a small smile creeping it's way up her lips.
"Hey!" her mother defended. "It's a very crowded suitcase! Now, give your ma and pa and kiss." She obliged, giving them both a small peck on the cheek.
"Be strong for us, ok?" her mom asked, throwing up a fist. That was their sign for strength and sturdiness. And if they needed her to be, Melody would try to be strong. Just for them.
"Yeah,"Melody replied, throwing a fist back.
"That's our girl!" her dad cheered. And with that, they rushed out with an accidental slam of the front door. Melody sadly looked into her bowl of cereal, and as if on cue, Kiku sleepily walked down stairs, sporting a yellow stripped long sleeved shirt and denim pants. When and how long he'd had got the spare change of clothes, she had no idea. But she wasn't really in the mood for asking, either.
Apparently, neither was he, as he stomped over to the table, instantly slamming his head down.
"So.... good morning, Kiku," she greeted.
"Ohayo," he plainly responded, lifting up his head a bit. She glanced up at him, immediately figuring he wasn't a morning person. He had bags under his eyes and was barely attentive at all. Poor guy looked like he hadn't slept in weeks.
"How are you this fine morning?" she asked, trying too break the awkward silence. Although she doubted he heard her, or was even still awake.
"Tired. Any coffee?" he asked, placing his head back down on the table. She was a bit surprise at his straightforward attitude, but just shrugged it off as a side effect of his sleepiness.
"Yeah, I'll make some," she offered, standing up and walking into the kitchen.
"Thank you," he responded, his speech muffled through his arms. As she stood there and waited for the coffee machine to do its thing, she wondered if she even still wanted to go out anymore. Once again, her attempts to send time with her folks had been brutally rebuffed. Not to mention, Kiku didn't look like he wanted to do much of anything. A few minutes later, she was teetering over too the table with a scolding hot cup of coffee swishing dangerously between her hands. Kiku didn't even raise his head as she slowly set the steaming hot liquid down in front of his barricaded face.
"Here ya go, Kiku. But be warned, its kinda-" she was interrupted when Kiku abruptly sat up, snatched the coffee off the table, and proceeded to chug the extremely hot liquid as if it were a slurpy. Thirty seconds later, he set the now empty cup on the wooden table.
"Well, I was gonna say it was pretty hot, but I suppose that wasn't necessary," Melody commented, obviously surprised at the otherwise quite and meek boys actions.
"Ah... forgive me. But think you, I needed that very much," he responded, rubbing this temples and blinking his eyes as if he had just woken up. He was sounding much more like his normal self.
"No, it's cool. It's just, that was pretty hot. And I didn't put any sugar or anything like that in there. Are you sure you're ok?"
"Yes, I'm fine," he answered, how fully awake. He vigilant, empty eyes now scanned over you. He was that way for a moment, before he spoke again.
"Where are you parents?" he asked. She was glad he got straight to the point instead of aimlessly asking her if she was ok, as she was pretty sure it was obvious she's not.
"My parents... they-"
"They left you?" he interjected. Melody was a bit shocked at this, considering he usually wasn't one to interject. But sure was even more shocked at how accurate he was being. His face stayed stoic, although she could see a bit of sympathy in his eyes.
"Yeah. How'd you know?" she asked. He indifferently shrugged his shoulders.
"I guess I just kind of expected it. Parents are so disappointing," he simply stated, leaning back and stretching. Melody, on the other hand, was shocked at his answer. With the raise of her brow, she decided to pry. Just a bit.
"I had no idea you felt that way," she responded. He turned back and faced her.
"Not many do. Just thought I'd let you know."
Melody wasn't sure how - or if- she should even reply to that, so decided to just ignore it. Besides, he was probably just a bit drowsy.
"Ok then. So, since my parents left to go handel some very important business," adding on emphasis so Kiku wouldn't think her parents were awful people," I was wondering if you'd want to spend a day out together. It'd kinda be like I'm repaying you for the cooking and cleaning you did yesterday," she finished. Kiku was silent for a moment, his face full of shock. But that was quickly replaced with a warm smile and rosy cheeks.
"Sure, I'd love to go with you, Mel-chan!" he sweetly accepted. Melody couldn't help but smile back at him; it was just so cute!
"Mel-chan, hm? Sounds nice! Okey dokey, Kiku! Let's get going!" she said, skipping to the door. Yeah, her parents may have ditched, but she had a feeling she would have a nice day with her new friend. Kiku quickly caught up, and together they walked out the door. Halfway down the street, Melody remembered something that she just couldn't ignore.
"Hey, Kiku?" she asked.
"Yes?"
"How did you get into my house yesterday??" He gave her an odd look, as if she sprouted a third eyeball.
"Why, you left the door unlocked, of course," he started obviously. She abruptly stopped in her tracks, rubbing her temples.
"Mel-chan?" Kiku asked, looking back at her. She harshly facepalmed.
"Oh geez!" she cried, dumbfounded by her own forgetfulness. "We should probably go back..."

A/N: Hey guys! So I know it's been a while since I've updated, and I'm really sorry for that! I was originally going to make this chapter longer, but then I realized it would be WAY to long, so I'll just write another chapter(which will be in Kiku' s POV, in case you don't know the drill by now). So, tell me if you guys liked this or not, and I'll be out with the next one soon. Well, sooner than the time I came out with this one! Bye, and thank you for reading!
