Kiku quietly walked along side Melody on the way to their... her house. Of course he already knew where she lived, but this was the only time she actually noticed, so it wasn't an understatement to say he was jumping with joy on the inside. The walk was very pleasant, but unfortunately for him, also short. It was a mere fifteen minuets before they arrived at her house and she unlocked the door. He was instantly greeted with the smell of cinnamon, which slowly wafted up his nose. He never expected her house to smell this good.
"My parents are away on a business trip, so we virtually have the house to ourselves," she explained, and he pretended like it was news to him.
"Oh? I see," he replied. There was absolutely no way he was going to start a conversation, at least not under these circumstances. But thankfully, Melody seemed like the talkative type, so he would never need to with her. Another sign they were destined for each other.
"Yeah. My mother works as a management consultant, while my dad is a regional sales representative, so they travel a lot," she replied. He nodded as response. Melody walked into the living room with her backpack and sat down at the table. Her shoes! HER SHOES! She cleared the bamboo shoot off the table, and took out all the supplies needed for the session while Kiku stayed in his spot, taking off his shoes. When she was finished, she crossed her legs and motioned for Kiku to sit across from her. He complied, waking over and taking a seat as he sat his backpack next to him, not needing anything out.
"Alright, shall we get started?" she asked, motioning to a packet labeled "Expressing Yourself Politely In Japan".
"No, we shall not," he exasperated, leaving Melody taken by surprise from his response.
"Your shoes," he pointed out, gesturing to her feet. At first he was met with a baffled silence, then he assumed she finally realized his annoyance.
"Oh, I get it. Japanese customs for Japanese tutoring, huh? My bad," she apologized as she quickly ran over to the door to take of her shoes. After the "abominations" were removed and Kiku was at ease, they finally began the lesson. They went over formal and informal speech, honorifics, and greetings, along with a little small talk. Kiku was enjoying quite a bit. But then again, he could be doing anything with her and be pleased.
"Oh man, Sam would be so mad at me right now. I can hear his complaints now!" Melody joked. Kiku perked up his ears at this.
"Sam?" Do I know a Sam? I know she associates with the blonde cow, but a Sam? WHY DON'T I KNOW THIS?!
"Hm? Oh yeah. He's my good friend. He'd be spitting fire because.... well, it's kinda silly," she said. Well, if she had a male friend, he was definitely going to pry.
"I don't mind. I hear silly things about me all the time. I really don't get offended easily," he assured. He gave her a small smile, to show gentleness. At least, he thought that's what it was supossed to show. He hoped that book would pay off.Just tell me already! He was too patient for his own good.
"Oh, well ok. He'd just be mad because he views you and me as mortal enemies. So this would basically be an act of treason to him," she explained, laughing afterwards. Kiku, however, found absolutely nothing funny. His small smile fell, and he felt a small rage burning inside of him.
"Oh really? How interesting," he replied. That was really the only thing he could say at the moment without scaring her.
"Yeah well, that's Sammy for ya!" she exclaimed, not noticing Kiku's displeased attitude through all of her giggles. He made sure to instill his poker face before she was finished. She didn't need to know how he felt. Nobody did.
"Ok, ok. I- I'm sorry. It just, when he first said it, he sounded just so... SILLY!" she explained. As she continued to laugh, Kiku quietly got up and began to leave. It was an understatement to say he was beyond pissed, and it took him everything in his power to not snap and tell her to shut up. He was in the middle of putting on his shoes when she interrupted him.
"Kiku, where are you going?" she inquired.
"Home," he blatantly replied, putting on his other shoe and refusing to look at her. He then put his backpack on his shoulders and headed for the door. He took a second to examine his face before turning it. Good, I still look calm. He turned the knob and threw open the door.
"Hey Kiku! Hold on for-...". He never heard the rest. In his anger, he quickly slammed the door in Melody's face. He stomped down the street, spilling out all sorts of curses and obscenities in a weird mixture of Japanese and English in the nighttime air. Finally, he found a bus bench a few blocks away and collapsed on it.
"Curse all of these damn American pigs! CURSE THEM ALL! All of these damn bastards trying to take her from me! What gives them the right?! They disgust me! Awful! Disgusting! Nauseating! Putrid! I hate them! I hate them!" he yelled out to seemingly no one. Then he broke down in tears. He didn't know whether to feel angry, sad, or embarrassed, but felt an odd mixture of all of them knotting up in his stomach. He was angry that someone else was putting bad thoughts about him in Melody's head. He was sad that she thought it was funny while he was in distress. He was embarrassed because he had showed her how angry he was and showed disrespect in her own house. Steaming hot tears rolled down his face, but he didn't bother to wipe them. He only covered them with hands as he began shaking on the bench, whether from the night breeze or his anger, he want sure. He just sat there, letting all of his tears and curses roll out, grabbing at his hair in the process. He wasn't sure how much time had passed before he was finally able to calm down, and he didn't care either. But finally, his sobs stopped, he stopped shaking, and his breathing was regulated. He wiped his tears and sat there for a while in deep thought, pinching the bridge of his nose. Finally, he let out a deep sigh and slowly got up from the bench. He began the walk to his apartment, and that's when he decided what he would do. He mumbled it under his breath and allowed a devious smile to take over his face, but it was gone the moment it was there. An innocent giggle escaped his lips.
"Keep your friends close and your enemies closer!"
And once again, he was calm.
